Don't worry there are plenty of people that agree with you and know that a properly raised pitbull can be a great companion. They've been bred by the wrong kind of people to often and portrayed by the media in a bad light based on the poorly bred/raised pitbulls out there. Its sad for the breed but there are still plenty of people out there that know a pitbull CAN be a perfectly normal good family dog.

You'll find most of us here love pitbulls and relize the bad rap they get from media due to irresponsible owners!
People are like slinky's, not really good for much. But its still fun to push them down the stairs.

I personally believe that the Pitt Bull is a fine example of my personal theory: There are no bad dogs, just bad owners. I have met Pitt Bulls that I would let play with my small children, while I have also met several small dogs that I don't want anywhere near them.

I love pits, and thinking about getting one soon. My obediance instructor has a stunning blue male who is a therapy dog. he is to die for, and he has fathered some pups. I may get one of his. I love the breed. We need to go after stupid people, pits can be extremly loving dogs, and are very smart.

My stepdaughter has a pitbull named Paris and she is the biggest baby. She takes Paris every Christmas and Easter to have her picture taken with Santa and the Easter Bunny. I agree, it is how you raise them on what kind of dog they will be. You can take any dog and make it mean but why would anyone want to do that, unless they are totally stupid!!!

My barn has a pit bill, she is wonderful, everyone plays with her, including all the little kids. We have that dog jumping over horse jumps, fetching, rolling over, you name it, she does it :) Pit bulls are wonderful!

I have several. Three of whom are therapy certified working dogs.

It is all about being a responsible owner and also about how the dog was bred.

Too many get the breed for the wrong reasons or knwo nothing about them before getting one and thus that is where many of the problems arise. BYBs who breed poor quality dogs are also a HUGE issue in his breed and in every other one IMO

PatchOPits, I have been wanting to get a bigger breed to deter some of the people who just walk into my house. Of course this only happend when I forget to leave the door locked, or when one of the kids forget.
I happen to love Pitties, and I think that just their appearance should be sufficient to stop people from walking in.
What is your opinion of having one as a guard dog?

I have 2 pitbulls and they're a poor excuse for being watch dogs. The best watch dog that I have ever had was a Rhodesian mix breed mutt that I smuggled across the border of Mexico as a pup. The pitbulls are too social and loves company even if they come uninvited.

I agree with pitpat2az most do not make good guard dogs.

However yes, to some their appearance alone is quite intimidating.

Actually mine all do great at guarding my house in the sense that they always let you know when someone is here and just the sound of them alone makes people think twice before even coming to the door. Also mine are verry protective of what is theirs. If I tell them its ok they will lay down but you can see them looking at the visitor the whole time. They are friendly to visitors as in they wont bite them but they dont look for attention from them either.My dog Hannibal held a robber down untill the police got here a few years ago. A man tried to crawl threw the doggy door and was half in and half out when Hannibal bit him on the shoulder and held him there untill police came.I do have one that is over protective of my daughter and did attempt to bite the babysitter when my daughter was throwing a tantrum.I have seen them both ways I have seen pit bulls that are so aggressive and then ones that are so nice a stranger can just walk off with them.

Yes, some may be protective yes to a point, but again they are not true guard dogs in the sense of a dog like a GSD, Mali, Rottie or mastiff.
There is a huge difference in dogs bred for that type of work and the APBT.

Showing signs of human aggression is not proper temperament for an APBT.

I don't know that we like them but we have six blue ones. lol We have some that are so passive they won't protect themselves. We have some that are protective of the property if we're not home, and one that is protective of the kids and grandchildren. When a 92 pound dog gets against your leg, looks at you with bared teeth, growls and walks sideways to move you away,- that's intimidating! We've never had one of our dogs to bite, but some probably would if they thought the family was in danger. The rest of the time they are huge lap dogs. They are very social and require a lot of attention. They like to get in the truck and go for rides. We can put two in the kennel in back and one in the front seat. They get more excited about rides than the kids do about Christmas. They're family, don't have to like them but gotta love 'em.
Quality is not expensive, it's priceless. I love blues!
