so i so should of been careful about this but i have had a betta fish for about three years and i have it in a bowl on my coffee table i never seen the cat go near it or anything and one day i came home and the fish was on the ground and my cat was wet. im deffinetly going to get another one. is i got like a little screen for the top do u think that it would take it off or anything.
I'm thinking that your cat will do whatever it takes to get to the fish. I have the coolest picture of my old cat Nikita gazing longingly into my 20 gallon tank. She would sit for hours and watch them. And as you saw, the kitty doesn't actually want the fish. They are just fascinated by the movement. You need to put the new fish someplace the kitty can't get at it or you're just asking for trouble.
If your Betta lived 3 years, before succumbing to a crafty cat, then he had a good life. The average lifespan of a Betta in captivity is 2 to 3 years.
My cats never bothered the fish, but I had a Rat Terrier dog that found my fancy goldfish delicious. The goldfish lived in a plastic pool outdoors in the summer and the dog got in one day and caught every last one of them. It must have taken him some time to finish his dirty deed. He left the fish carcasses lined up around the edge of the pool.
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.
Look into an aquarium. The tops are usually more secure and easily modified. You can get 1 or 2 gal. pretty cheap, plus your new fish will have more room. I had a betta in a bowl with a plastic plant. My cat liked to play with the plant. I was constantly searching for the plant, cleaning it and repositioning it. One day I came home to find my fish dead beside the bowl. My cat was running around the house with the plant in his mouth. Now I have a 10 gal aquarium with two goldfish.
