I bought a littermaid cat box about six months ago and I hate it. It was the biggest waste of $100 ever. I have 4 cats and the littermaid is not the only litter box I have. It constantly stops working, especially if my largest cat has used it. The motor is cheap and the tiny, plastic arm that moves the entire rake has already broken once. I was able to fix it, but I don't know how long it will last. I stupidly let my two kittens play with the box so couldn't return when it first started screwing up. Do any of you have better luck with this product? How big are they and how many do you have? Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
HATE it !!!!! I tried it last year when all I had was one kitty and it was the biggest waste of money ever just like you said. The stupid rake just broke up the clumps and made a mess. If the poo was even remotely loose it just got stuck all over the freaking rake. And lets not even get into the stench whenever that little door opened. ARGH! I even bought some disposable bags on eBay so that I could save money on those stupid plastic containers. I used duct tape to reinforce the containers so they wouldn't crack and move spewing litter underneath every time the thing scooped. Now I have 3 cats and 3 ordinary covered boxes which I scoop myself once a day. I use a Litter Locker. This works like a diaper genie and you turn the handle and the waste and odor get locked away until you have to empty it about once a week.(depending on the amount of waste you put in it)
I don't have a littermaid, because although the picture on the box makes it look heavenly, the rational part of my brain tells me with six cats it will NEVER work. I have tried using the litter locker however, and also found it not very feasible in a multiple cat home... I had to turn the handle so many fricking with each litter box cleaning I went through the plastic way too fast, or wouldn't get to use all of the plastic wrap because with the larger amount of waste in each use, I'd run out of room in the chamber... once something in the chamber sliced open the plastic and I had a very OLD mess inside. I think I finally broke the handle of the cheap thing in less than 2 months. Now what I do with my 6 cats, for one I keep the litter in the basement. I have 4 Clevercat Topentry Litterboxes (http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754439) and fill each one with the 35lb yellow containers of Tidy Cat clumping litter with Tidy Lock (http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2750976, I get the 35lb container at Sam's Club)and I save the empty container to hold the waste. Of course, the 35lb container weighs about 45 lbs when it's time to haul it upstairs and outside, but we have people over who can't believe we have 6 cats cause they can't "smell" it. Plus it help out with our trashman, who for some reason or another refused to pick up bags if he could tell it was full of litter. Even if they were triple bagged. And was only the result of one or two days of cleaning. But he has no problem with the 45lb container of litter. Whatever floats his boat... It takes a week and half to two weeks to fill a container.
Rainbowzoo622- That Top Entry looks clever! But it also looks just like the totes that I put away my summer clothes in. I'm thinking I'd have kitties peeing in my swimsuits if I got them one of those. LOL! The litter locker is working for 3 cats but they are all petite so maybe that's why. I did rip the bag once and that was entirely too gross! My sister felt with the giant bricks from her boy's pee that it wouldn't work for her either. The liner refill lasts me a month and I empty it once a week. I buy the refills in packs of 5 on eBay to save money. Perhaps it is best for 1 or 2 cat homes. Funny that you mention the concern about odor because I ask new people to come in and verify that they can't smell the cats all the time because I'm a paranoid neat freak. So far so good! And my boxes are all on the upstairs bedroom level because I don't have much choice in my condo.
I just use a plain old fashioned litter box for my babies. I clean it out twice a day (I keep it in a fairly small bathroom and I'm paranoid about odors too ) and to keep the waste I got a Diaper Genie. The Litter Locker designed just for cats costs like 3 times as much and most stores don't carry the refills. The Diaper Genie works great, cost less than $20 at Wal-Mart, and the refills are easy to find. The liners are scented and hold more waste at once than the Litter Locker. Plus they last longer and come scented. I recommend it for you MaxandAllie! Heres to loving kitties!
