The pups are eating food now and also drinking water so I was wondering if I need to continue feeding them the formula that Pen gave me the recipe for? My fiance said if they are eating and drinking then I can stop but I was just wondering what everyone else thought. They are getting big.The runt is kind of crazy,it runs circles barking and growling and always chews on the other pups sometimes its continuose and I think its crazy. lol
4 weeks old and mom dont really like to feed them. She dont clean them at all and will feed only if they cry a long time and i sit in there with her,if I walk out she is done with them and is not happy about doing it at all.
Immunique, the puppies are capable of eating puppy food, or dog food, if you prefer. If it's larger kibbles, you will have to soften it a lot by pouring warm water on it, until it soaks it up. Just make sure it's a high quality dog food, with meat as the primary ingedients, and the grain either minimal, or non-existant. You can still put the formula with the dog food if you want to get them used to it. Gradually lessen the liquid until the food is dry. Always have fresh water for them though. The best dish is a big round circle with a hole in the middle, that way they are all around the dish. If you have trouble with one or 2 being hogs, feed them seperately. Good luck, and let us know how it works.
You called it Pen there is 2 hogs and today I did feed them 4 and 4 and it worked pretty good. Yes they eat food but I havent tried it dry yet I keep soaking it in warm water. I guess I will stop with the formula, My fiance told me to but I was just checking what others thought. O-yea about the water I keep it in there and they will drink and drink untill its gone no matter how much I fill it up, they get bloated.
Immunique, if they all have sharp little teeth, then try them with a little less fluid in the food, or even try giving them a couple of dry kibbles, and see if they munch them down. You don't really want to go too drastically from wet to dry, because there's a small chance that one could choke. You will notice them slowing down very slightly the dryer the food gets. Are they all the same size, or is there a smaller one in the bunch? You can keep an eye on her getting pushed out by the others, which often happens. One thing I forgot to ask you, have you wormed them yet? They should have been done already at 2 weeks, but if you did'nt then get them now. This is extremely important. You need to be very careful about who comes in to see the pups now, in fact I would'nt let anyone. You don't want anybody bringing anything in on their shoes that the pups could get. Puppies have immunity from parvo virus up to a certain age, from their dams, but there is also a window of time when the dam's immunity interferes with the parvo immunization-hence the importance of keeping the puppies well protected from outside sources of contamination. Keep up the good work!
Immunique, is the mother cleaning them at all? If she is'nt I would take a few wet clean rags, and gently wash their butts. Since they are eating food, and if she's not cleaning them, you run the risk of a bit of constipation. It may seem like they're drinking a lot of water, but it will help with their digestive tract.I also forgot to ask you what food you are feeding, and how much?
Yes I just noticed about 30 minutes ago that one female is constapated she was shaking real bad trying to poop, I gave her a little karo syrup and she pooped but she was shaking trying so hard to poop. Yes there is a runt which is smaller then all the rest. Yes they got de-wormed but have to go again on tuesday to get de-wormed again and shots. I have been making shure the runt gets her fair share of food. I am feeding them Exceed puppy formula and I am guilty of not measuring the food. I put one scoop and soak it in water (I use a small bowl for the scoop) I do that 3 times in the day and once in the night.
Congratulations,Imunique, for doing such a great job with the puppies. I know you were very nervous about having the responsibility of caring for the mother and pups. I hope your boyfriend appreciates all the hard work you have done.
Thank you, Yes I was nervouse and it was hard.My boyfriend does appreciate it alot but now that I did it myself we disagree on how certain things should be done because before I never said anything because he did ut all but now that I learned some things I did some things different and not how he wanted. I didnt go at 2 days to get the dew claws done and he was a little upset but I had 2 reasons #1 would you like it if I cut your thumb off and #2 the mom was having a hard time so I didnt want the strange smells of the vet and the other animals he attended to that day on the pups, I didnt want to risk her rejecting them that early. That is just one thing we now disagree on. But he is still verry thankfull for how hard I worked.
Is the dam cleaning them at all? If not just wipe them after they feed. The wiping is what stimulates them to defecate. Of course, you might have to give them a wipe afterwards, because she's not doing that either. I expect you've noticed that they usually poop after eating. You should probably take a look at the dog food bag, and see what the requirements are for their age and weight. They sound like they're doing well; so good job.
UPDATE**** Thank you so much for all the help from everyone Pen you have great advice and seem to know what the next problem is gonna be and give me answers before I can even ask. The puppies are eating food now without it being sofened at all and they seem to be pooping fine. I am cleaning them everytime they eat. (when can I stop that) They are doing good and getting big. Mom is doing good too but her nipples are so red and look so full and soar, should I squeeze the milk out or something? I dont think so because then they will just keep filling back up.
