My sister's cat is pregnant and I don't know anything about cats, only dogs. She is the first female cat we have ever had. I need info on taking care of her and her kittens. Can anyone tell me how long it may take for them to be born and the supplies I may need to keep them healthy. All our past cats were males and over 3 years old when we got them. We are new the the kitten thing. Please help us.

Personally mine have always been spayed so I have no first hand knowledge to offer. I just didn't want you to feel ignored. Go read through the Cat medical forum. There have been several threads related to pregnant cats in the last week or so and some of those might answer your questions.

Hi there My oldest female has had 3 litters and is currently Pregnant with her fourth due any day. I don't know a lot of specifics but you can usually tell when they are getting close as they tend to waddle more (at least mine does but she is a very small slender build) also if you feel around the nipples they tend to get larger and if you feel around them they will start to sort of "sweel up" as the milk comes in that is usually a sign they are close.alsu they may show signs of nesting type behavior such as getting into closets and mine tends to dig at things such ad trying to get between sofa pillows and under the blankets of the bed. Also if you have other animals especially Male cats You should segregate her from the rest give her an area that is cozy, warm and with ample food and water and litterbox. such as a seperate laundry area you can close off. Because Male cats may feel threatend by the kittens "territory issues" and may harm them. you may want to supply a box or something similar and line it with newspaper and soft cloths such as old clean towels etc.as far as the birthing she will pretty much do everything herself. she will start pacing and licking herself in the beginning and inbetween. as she delivers she will make a loud destinctive crying sound don't be alarmed at it because she is going to be in some discomfort. as the kitten is out she should quickly start to free it from it's sac. if she dosen't you may wat to have at the ready some clean soft cloths,rubber hospital gloves (clean of course) stearilize some small scissors ahead of time and a heating pad set to low be sure it isn't too hot though.because you may have to free the kitten from the sac quickly. but that rarely happens. if you have to though just carefully cut the sac away and you may have to use the cloths to rub the kitten gently but vigoursley to get it crying(breathing)and if she dosent take to it right away be sure to keep it warm and keep trying to introduce it to her. you may need to get small bottles and kitten milk if she refuses to nurse it but this rarely happens as i said just trying to give you worse case scenario. If the kitten seems to get stuck you can gently try to help her deliver but I must warn it may be tricky as you have to work with her pushes , also if she goes more than an hour between kittens she is either done or there may be a problem so be sure your vet is aware you have a pregnant female and be sure to keep his or her number handy. but usually she will handle everything herself just keep a lookout for complications and like I said you can always call your vet if you have ?'s or concerns. In her last little bit of pregnancy I like to give a little added nutrition and also while she is nursing. I usually give canned food in addition to dry plus stores sell a milk like product I know wal-mart and petsmart here have it. the kind I use is called just born it's container looks like a juice box. it is already mixed but I belive they also sell a powdered type. it says on the back that it is for pregnant and nursing cats and gives instructions on how to serve to her. Once she is done delivering and has settled down you will wand to change her box or have a new one made up with clean soft cloths etc. the one she delivered in will be gross with blood etc. basically that is it at about 6 weeks old or so you can start trying to wean the kittens from her with moistened soft dryfood or mushed up canned food usually I use a plastic spoon and kinda smush it in their face gently so they will lick it and once they get the taste of it they will go to town on their own and litter training is usually really easy just keep putting them in a nice clean box and take their paw and show them the scratching motion and they will catch on. that is about it but if you have any other ?'s feel free to give me a holler and I'll try to answer them you can e-mail me if you'd like poohbher099@msn.com. take care and enjoy the new additions to your family. No offense Poohbher, but that post was too long even for me to finish and I'm long winded! (that was a joke, not an attack)

Anyway, Momma cat's instincts should take care of just about everything. As long as they are nursing and she is paying attention to them everything should be fine. Poohbher looks like the resident expert, so I would direct any specific questions to her. I strongly recommend getting Momma cat spayed once she weans her babies (at 6-8 weeks) so you dont end up in this situation again.

poohbher, are you a show/breeder ? Just trying to understand why your one cat is on a fourth litter. Seems like alot of kittens added to the already over abundent cat population. Also, we do have a pm feature here. You may be better to pm your email address to the person intended, instead of advertising it for all to see on a public forum. Just a thought.....

yep I know I was long winded lol but wanted to cover just about everything possible .

I have been showing/breeding cats since I was a teenager
I do have one retired show cat (since I am no longer phisically able to participate in shows I have had her spayed. my female momma kitty is used to breed however this will be her last litter as soon as the kittens are weaned she will be spayed and the daddy already has an appt to be fixed so they will be able to live their lives and rest. ?I will keep a female kitten to take over as the new momma.. I am aware of the abundant population & I have adopted several shelter animals as well as foster animals for my local spca. I am an avid supporter of my local spca and an advocate for spay/neuter programs in my area. thanks for your concern for our wonderful companions.

Its wonderful to see responsible breeders. There are so many that allow their unaltered cats to roam free, producing and having litter after litter of kittens that end up god knows where. Always nice to meet the ones that actually care about the animals in their care. Welcome to the forum !

I think it is wonderful that you are limiting the number of litters your breeding cat is having. I've seen horrible instances of breeders breeding cats until they are so used up and tired from raising kittens its sad. All cats will get that way if they go unspayed and just have litter after litter. A good friend of mine breeds and wont let her kitty have more than 5 litters, and that is only for very stong mommas. Her breed (I cannot remember for the life of me what they are) has small litters, only 3 or 4 at a time max, and only one of her mommas she let have 5 litters. The other two she only allowed 4, and her current momma is carrying litter number 2. It's so cute, the oldest momma still alive (the original momma has gone to Rainbow Bridge) acts like such a grandma to all the kittens. The other former momma cat acts annoyed by them, like she already did her time and wants no part of it.

The single most important thing that we can do to save animals from all the suffering and death that their overpopulation causes is to spay and neuter them. Just one unaltered female cat and her offspring can produce an estimated 420,000 cats in only seven years. In six years, a female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies. So every time we spay or neuter just one animal, we prevent the births of thousands of animals. On the other hand, if we pass by even one unsterilized animal without seeing to it that she or he is spayed or neutered, we are turning our backs on thousands of unwanted animals and more than likely condemning them to hideous fates.

HorseMama, didn't they teach you in school to cite your sources and to use quotations? It's not nice to plagerize. I agree with you completly, but try using your own words instead of regurgitating someone elses.
