Can anyone give me any opinions on fly sheets for horses? Recommend them? Don't recommend them? The flies are absolutely horrible where I live and I have already tried every single brand of chemical under the sun recommended and unless I want to douse my horse in them several times daily, THEY DON'T WORK! I am close to getting rid of her before I have to watch her suffer thru another summer of torture from being eaten alive. I already use the fly mask but I am thinking of getting the full bodied fly sheet and the boots. My questions are can the flies get up underneath and crawl into the fly sheet where it would actually be worse because now the horse can't swat them and will my horse overheat in the fly sheet? Thank you.
Have you tried this recipe? 1 cup of water 1 cup of Avon Skin So Soft bath oil 2 cups of vinegar 1 tablespoon of pure Eucalyptus oil 1 teaspoon of pure Tea tree oil 1 tablespoon of pure citronella oil (not the kind for lamps)
We used this with a fair amount of success, and the flies hated it. Good luck.
I buy fly spray in concentrate and I actually mix it up a little stronger than recomended, not real good for sensetive skinned horses but the higher concentration does help a bunch. Also a tip to keep bots from laying eggs in the typical popular spots, such as the insides of the knees, I use RepelX Fly Lotion, it kind of got an oilyness to it but it sticks to the hair and skin better than regular fly spray and last longer. I rub it in on their knees. Its not an ideal solution for the entire body but good for places that attract flies more. I have never used to the fly sheets much cause my horses are on open pasture that has a bit of woods on it, they would either get stuck and get hurt or the sheet would get ripped and it would be all over. You can also take a sponge, pour a little fly spray on it and really get the area around their eyes, since we dont want to spray stuff around their eyes and do the same for the ears. For the spraying part just make sure to soak her good. Wish I could help more about the sheet issue.
