We have an 11 year old male neutered cat, Choo Choo, that seems to be going through some type of emotional issue. He wanders around the house meowing and sometimes yowling as if he is restless, bored, discontented and looking for something. He also follows us around wanting to be in the same room with someone. Last May our older cat died and Choo Choo was very traumatized by the loss of his companion. It took a while but he seemed to adjust to the lack of his partner. About a month ago he stopped sleeping on our bed at night and now sleeps downstairs on the sofa in a box. But every morning between 4am-5am he comes up stairs and meows at us then goes back downstairs. He started spraying in the house and urinating on the bahroom rug. As a result he was treated for a unrinary infection and possible stones. His urinary problems are better and he does not appear to be in pain. The litter box is clean and I have not changed type of litter. We think his spraying is part of his emotional problem. Does anybody have any ideas on how we get Choo Choo to stop the wandering, following, restlessness, meowing, spraying and yowling?
Have you considered getting him another companion? A kitten might just be annoying to him but another adult cat to hang around with might help. Maybe not a male, but a spayed older female might be acceptable as a pal. Since you've already cleared up the medical issue, it seems like he is just having a delayed reaction to the loss of his companion.
