I am new to this site but I do have a question. I have a cat (for 7 years) who I adore but I would like to adopt a dog. Does anyone know if this will be a hard transition for my cat. I do not want him to be threatened in anyway. He has been around other dogs (his best friend is my roommmates dog).
You never know how they will react. Any change can be hard on a cat. Or they can be the type that can adapt to anything just fine. They are such picky little beasts and they get spoiled in their routines. They will usually let you know if they are mad by acting out. Going potty in an inappropriate place is a common way to say they are mad. But if your cat is accustomed to a dog in the house, he will probably be fine. If you get an adult dog from a shelter, they can usually tell you how the dog is around cats. I have noticed on Petfinder, there is a symbol that identifies dogs that are not good with cats. Just make sure kitty has a place to retreat and that the litterbox is private until he adjusts to the new dog being in his space.
Hello and welcome...We have 2 cats that were around 2 years old when we got Max..lab mix at 2 months of age...he is almost 6 months and they still don't get along...He has come to letting them walk by him without chasing them...and I guess that is the best I can hope for...They (the cats) have several places to run and hide from Max...Best of luck..
Sometimes a cat will like one dog and not another. I have 4 cats, a Chihuahua, a Rat terrier and an adult Bullmastiff and two 7 month old Bullmastiff pups all in the house together. None of the cats like the Rat Terrier and do not play with her or curl up and take a nap with her. My adult Bullmastiff doesn't play with the cats but any of them will curl up beside her. All of the cats like the Chihuahua and some of them will even groom him. None of the cats are afraid of the pups but they are too energetic and the cats don't want to play with them. I think age and energy level of the dog has a lot to do with whether a cat will like it or not.
There was a lot of good advice given on the "Getting a dog" thread. Check it out and congratulations on your new place and puppy. The only other advice I would give is wait a little while after the move before getting the dog, so kitty only has to adjust to one thing at a time.
