I was holding my 4 month old minidach/minichi a hour ago and when i put her down there was 2 drops of blood on my shirt where her bottom was sitting. My vet said it would be 2 months before her heat cycle. Is this the beginning, or is she too young? the vet was planning on spaying her in 2 months. She is only dog and kept inside always so there is noway for preg. i am just worried about this cycle thing, my poor baby. please give any and all advise
I suppose anything is possible although 4 months is quite young for a first heat, generally it around 6 months or later. Small dogs tend to mature earlier than larger dogs. I would try to make certain where the blood was actually coming from. Are there any other heat symptoms like swelling nipples or vulva? Generally that's pretty noticable. I only had one of my three go into heat, and that was unexpected as she just turned 6 months a few days before and beat her spay appointment by days :( She was noticibly swollen like as in atleast twice the normal pre heat size. Unfortunately I didn't notice it earlier since she's a long haired dog. If she is actually in heat now, contact your vet and let them know. Some vets will spay after a heat earlier than others. Mine asked me to wait and rebook at least 2 months AFTER the heat was finished to ensure no problems with bleeding. Not a problem since this was well before her next heat would be due anyways. I think the majority of vets don't ask that you wait that long but it's a good idea to check anyways.
Has your dog been on a regular worming program, and is it possible that she ate anything to constipate her? Did yoU TAKE A q-tip to make sure of the source of the blood? 4 months is too early for a heat cycle, are you positive of her age?
She is 5 months, and yes she has had all shots. I took her to vet the day after i got her and we started all shots she was 6 weeks old and filled with worms and finished all shots 1 month ago april 18. 2 weeks ago i took her for the dental care checkup with vet. Yesterday she had a total of 4 dimes size drops of blood. Yes, i checked with a Q tip. I have a vet appt on thurs morning, i called and got her in for another check up. her diet has been the same, nothing has changed.
she had round worms and the vet has wormed her 2 times. she is 21 weeks i just looked up her date, she has been to the vet 5 times sunce i have had her. she has been worm free for 2 months and she never goes outside.
A full sister to my male minpin started her first heat when she was barely 5 months old, and I know of one other from a breed specific group I belong to that also had her first heat at 5 months. Six months seems to be pretty common, unfortunately.
If this is actually the start of her heat cycle (and it sounds to me that it is), as long as you get her through it without an accidental pregnancy, I would wait until about two months after before having her spayed since there wouldn't be any hurry then. However, if she should accidently get out during her heat or if you even SUSPECT that she might have been bred, I would do a spay immediately. An abort/spay is never the preferred option but (IMO) is preferable to a high risk pregnancy. Hopefully that won't happen.
thanks, she is our only dog and she never goes ou, so i dont have to worry about breeding. i just wanted to know if this is her heat and what i needed to do for her if any thing. oh i have noticed some blood drops today and she keeps licking herself and she is being nicer and more loveing than normal.
What did the vet say? Heat cycles vary but in general they will be in heat for about 3 weeks, though 4 weeks is very possible. Bleeding is heaviest in week 2 and 3. There is nothing special to do for her if she is in heat other than keeping her away from intact males, and you may need to clean up after her if she is not real clean about her cycles.
People are like slinky's, not really good for much. But its still fun to push them down the stairs.
