Tinker ripped a dew claw tonite, poor kid. Looks like a trip to the vet tomorrow, its still kind of hanging on by a few threads but not much I can do about it at the moment, IG's are the biggest wimps in the world. He would scream bloody murder if I tried to do anything with it. I have never had a dog rip one before, most everything has had them removed as pups. He is sleeping like a log right now so it must not be bothering him too bad. Wish the poor baby luck for tomorrow.
Poor baby! Give him a kiss from me. I'm glad Siberians are allowed to remove them. We kept thinking our boy was lame until we realized he kept catching his dewclaws on everything. Once we got them removed, he was just fine. I can't wait to get Maya's removed after this show season is over. She so far hasn't been lame, but we will also train her in harness. Dewclaws get ripped getting caught on ganglines all the time. Not pretty...
That is when I am glad I can remove them on my Mini Aussies. I hate dewclaws, they can be so painful. If she will let you get to it, I would wrap it in regular guaze (god I know I screwed that one up), and then wrap it in vetwrap. The vetwrap is self sticking, and works great. You can it just about anywhere that sells horse supplies. I always have some around just incase of anything. If nothing else, it will keep it from snagging again til you get to the vets. Good luck, and give her a kiss for me
Ironically I signed on to write a post about the same topic. Bode ripped a dewclaw a couple years ago and it never grew back the same. This morning I looked at him and the nail was GONE, only a little pink nub left. He was his happy self, as though nothing happened. Anyways I took him to the vet and now he's on antibiotics for a week. He wasn't licking it so they decided not to bandage it.
I wondered how he lost the nail, there was no blood anywhere in the house and he is rarely unattended outside. Then I found it by accident. I was picking up some items on the floor and saw a rawhide under the couch--and his nail was sitting next to it. I guess he was trying to fish it out from under there. It came off in one piece and the part that was attached to the skin is hollow. It looks pretty weird and I'm amazed it didn't bleed at all.
He survived!!! If he had been born here they would have been taken off as a pup but unfortunatley Tinker is a dog auction resuce and the only thing he was missing when I got him was half his right ear. They gassed him down to work on it so I had to leave him there for a little while, he was such a worry wort when I picked him up he whined and cried all the way home. I am now a firm believer in neonatal dew claw removal.
