I have a 9wk Sheltie puppy, but he's very timid. I've had other dogs before but never one like this. He'll back up when I try to pet him, doesn't care for human interaction, refuses to move if there's a leash on him. The leash part I figure I can train, but the standoffish attitude concerns me. He plays with our 3 month old JRT (dominant one) but never with us. Is this something he'll grow out of, or is this just his personality? Anyone with similar experiences with this? Thanks
there are shy shelties out there, yes. Where'd you get your dog from? Ideally you want to get this dog out and socialize it around people and strangers as much as possible. Also, try to spend a few hours a day alone with the puppy, out of the sight of your JRT. You want the puppy bonding to you, not your JRT.
Never trust a tall dwarf... he's lying about something.
I would seek the help of an animal behaviorist and also enroll in training classes. The behaviorist can evaluate and give you pointers on how to help your pup overcome the shyness & the classes will help with socialization as well as bonding. Good luck =)
