Hi, I'm new here! I have two babies...an amazing dog named Albert, and a new kitty named Khloe. Khloe was adopted over the weekend. It looks like I may be a bit allergic to her. I can stand her in the house. I got a reaction yesterday when she was nuzzling my face. I should've gotten up and washed my hands or something. I was playing with her and rubbed my eyes and BAM. itchy red swollen eyes!
I don't want to give her up, and I hear stories of people living with allergies and still having animals..I picked up a bottle of Claritin today since Benadryl makes me sleepy. Any other tips or recommendations to keep my allergies at bay? I've done some research today and it looks like the saliva is what hurt me. So if i don't let her lick my face, and wash my hands after handling her and before touching my eyes...I should be ok???? I'm fine with Albert. he doesn't bug me..and i've fostered tons of dogs throughout the years..I'm only around 2 other cats ever..one I can't go near and the other I can play with just fine. So I'm confused!
You poor thing! My mom was allergic to cats, but let me have all of my babies plus a plethora of foster-babies. She coped pretty much just like you said, wash after handling the kitties, use an over-the-counter allergy medication, and grin and bear it! She also had a problem with cat dander, so we got an air-filter thing that helped some with that. Whether you should keep kitty or not is your call. Just weigh how bad your symtoms are vs. your love of cats. It's not fair for you or kitty to keep him if you are physically miserable every time you play with him.
Also, you might give it a little time, sometimes allergy symtoms will subside as your body gets use to, or builds a tolerance to, allergens.
o that stinks! i got a kitten about a year or so ago, and my allergies got so bad from it that i had to give it to a close friend who i knew would take care of it. it was really hard to do, but it had to be done because i was literally not breathing..yeah it got that bad. butttttttt hopefully your allergies arent that bad! . but if you have bad allergies, then you might want to consider..yea im not gonna say it. but i really hope that doesnt happen cuz i cried my eyes out when i had to give up mayzee.
idk just make sure u wash your hands and the most important thing is DO NOT TOUCH your eyes or face! it makes it way worse.
try not to handle it as much. try like playing with it for 10 minutes and do little play sessions like that. it might make it better.
I read somewhere once that there is a special cream that blocks allergens that you can put on. I couldn't find it through Google. All I remember is that is was developed for people that are allergic to water (yeah, that would be HORRIBLE!), but people with pet allergies found it helped them too.
Also, try some eyedrops designed for "allergy eyes" like Clear-eyes or Visine. Maybe they will help.
I hope you get to keep your furball! Keep us posted!
I like most cats better than I like most people. I'll try to be nicer if you try to be smarter.
People who suffer from allergies to cats, dogs, or other animals may be misguidedly advised to find new homes for their companion animals, but doctors are increasingly recognizing the importance of the human-animal bond. Besides, says one California allergist, If the advice to give up their pets is handed down most people change allergists rather than change pets. There are many ways to increase the chances that your allergies and your animal companion can peacefully coexist.
