we recently adopted a rottweillwer puppy Summer, shes going to be 8 weeks old.We have over 12 years of rttie experiance and Summer is like no other puppy I have ever seen. When we pick her up outside because she wont come in from the yard or the front porch she will turn on us to bite us and growl.shes only 8 weeks!! this has been happening no matter what tactics we try. the vet sees nothing physically wrong with her except that she has a hernia and we never touch that area.Any suggestions. shes otherwise great, on a steady diet of ukenuba for large breed puppies....I feel like a failure here as this behavior is getting worse.
If she is now just turning 8wks old, when did you get her? From your post, it sounds like you got her to soon, and the breeder was not a good one. She could have never been socialized by her littermates, or worse the people didn't do anything with them as pups. The worst thing being bad breeding and a nasty temperment. As a breeder, I start petting and talking to my pups as soon as the open their eyes, I have found it makes them more people orianted. Although most aussies love their people very much.
So, little Summer is acting up is she? Persistant obedience, and loads of love and cuddles, and you should be ok. I would put her into puppy school soon, the more socialization, the better. Put a harness on her so she gets used to it, or a collar if you want to.Then start with the the leash. Try to redirect the nips, but at the same time, it's normal for her age.I would certainly start to crate train her, leaving the door open in the day time, with a nice soft blanket, and a kong, and another fairly indestructable toy. That way she'll have a safe haven to go to if she wants, and if you're having the girls over for lunch, Summer can eye up their ankles from the safety of her crate, unless of course she stops nipping right away. When did you get her, or at what age, I should say? Her behaviour is a little different from the Rotties I've had. Good luck with the battle, let us know how it goes.
thank you so much for all your replys I feel less alone. Summer was not well socialized I foster for a rescue and Summer and 3 others were in a garage, 6 siblings were deceased. I have been petting her a llot before I pick her up and shes been better...not there yet but better. her puppy classes start in 3 weeks.I do have a collar on her, is a harness better? she has a crate and still hates it, but on the upside loves her kong toy. her brother is in a nearby city, and he seems more "angry" than her.
summersmommy, it sounds like you've taken on a big job. Who knows what those poor little puppies went through. Do you know why 6 of the pups were dead? I actually think this is a case for an animal behaviourist, and the sooner the better. I personally would'nt force her into the crate, but have the crate in an x-pen. It sounds like this poor little dog has either been locked in a place with no windows, or just plain neglected, abused or all of the above. Thats not the greatest start for an animal such as the Rottie. (or any animal)I wish you lots of luck, and hope you stick with her. Big hugs for Summer.xoxoxo
