Puppies will be 3 wks old on monday and Lola really needs to go to the groomers ASAP Ive tried to keep up on the brushing but shes been laying alot with her puppies and she now has tons of matting and i did trim and cut the hair around her boobs so the puppies could feed. Im thinking tho that taking her to petsmart groomers that take 3 hours is to long to keep her and pups apart or is it?
Im going to try and find the mobile groomers , some one that will come here and she is their only priority, and its faster. Should i wait a week longer or is this long enough? her coat is just getting worse every day . She is kept in a puppy cut and not the long maltese hair, but i tried clipping her myself right when we found out she was pregnant but the groomers didnt want to take her being its to stressful on a pregnant female. so its been awhile since shes gone to get a real cut, my clipper cut didnt help her at all..lol she looked like a hacked up sheep.
also with the heat for the puppies i have a heater on them and she is getting really warm and i know she would feel much better with a shaved cut.
please anyone that knows how soon i can get her groomed i would appreciate it
I would have another go at her with a big foot on the clippers. Who cares what she looks like, as long as she's comfortable. The puppies should be half weaned by now, are you giving them food? Unless you're in a very cold climate, you no longer need the heater, either, since the pups are 3 weeks old. You still need to have them in a cozy bed, but you don't need a heater. What is your location?
I wouldn't subject my bitch to outside dogs until the pups have had their first shot. It can be easy for her to bring somthing home. Pen, my pups are almost 4wks old and they are not eating anything but moms milk. I wouldn't expect them to be 1/2 weaned at 3wks, but maybe that is just my breed. Shave her yourself, pen is right at this point who cares what she looks like, her hair will start to grow in by the time the pups have had their shot. Good luck
Illusionminis, when do you start feeding softened dog food, or supplement with a formula?I literally have to because my bitches will refuse to feed them, sometimes right at 3 weeks, you can see them getting ready to escape. You're right, I was'nt taking into account the different breed.
I start right around 4 1/2-5 weeks. Mine little guys are 3 1/2 weeks now, and don't have any teeth yet. They really are not interested in licking anything up, and I had found that with full sized aussies when I bred years ago. I usually have them completly off mom by 61/2 weeks, and then I start crate training them at 7wks. Home at 8-9 weeks. This litter I get to keep one til 12 wks. New parents will be on vacation. I used a syring last night to give the dewormer. I know my boss breed a little toy rare breed called a mi-ki, and They don't really start weaning til 6 wks, and then they usually go home around 9-10wks. Oh well it is amazing how different breeds can be. I haven't had a bitch refuse to nurse. I am sure I will one day. Most of mine would nurse as long as the pups want to.
Wow, you learn something new every day.My pups have needle sharp little teeth at an early age, and think that's why the dogs want them away. I always cut the pups nails, but I can imagine how it must hurt nursing those little sharks. Thanks for the info on the Australian Shepherd.
Please do not take momma dog anywhere while you still have the pups there. The chances of her coming back with some type of bacteria or illness are pretty great. Remember, the pups have very little immunity.
And please do not have someone come into your house to groom her. Momma dogs do not like or need the added stress of strangers. Much less strangers with sissors and clippers.
Deal with the matts on your own. Clip her yourself if you feel it is needed. Or rubber band her fur if that will help. Right now is not the time to be worried about keeping her groomed. You really need to think about keeping her warm, safe, comfortable and able to help take care of her pups uninterrupted.
