My Maltese Belly had surgery for a luxating patella 6 1/2 weeks ago. She has started running around quite a bit and does not carry her leg anymore. She does still limp. I was wondering what is normal recovery like? Is she doing well? When will the limping go away?

She is doing very well. The limp could stay around for a while. Some dogs always seem to be a bit off. The muscle has to come back now. I wouldn't let her get to excited, but keep up the good work

11 weeks have gone by now. She still limps a bit - especially whe she has been lying down and then gets up. Will it ever go away? She didn't limp before surgery!

A slight limp may never really go away. Contact your vet, he may want to do some x-rays to make sure everything is where it is supposed to be. Think of her as if she was a person, it takes a human many months to fully recover from major surgery. It to will take her a long time to fully recover. My Mini Aussies broke her rear hock. she was in a cast from thanksgiving till January. She will still limp on it on occasion. It took her almost 5 wks for her to put it down fully after the cast came off. The muscles feel funny to them. Also if she had trouble with the leg baring weight, she may still remember that and being cautious.

Remember Check with your vet. It never hurts to see what he thinks.

you said she had started running around 6 1/2 weeks after surgery, maybe she wasn't kept from running for a long enough period of time to allow the injury to heal.
