Hi there we just got a beagle pup 9mths old. They told us he was house trained, however I am confused. We have the crate he has been trained with and the previous owners would crate him at night and then promptly put him outside for the day on a leash. so we are putting him in the crate at night and taking him out on a walk as soon as we wake up. The rest of the day he is free to venture in and outt of the crate at his leisure. Today though he pooped in the house. So what am i doing wrong and how do i teach him to go to the door and cry to be let out?
Just because he was "house trained" when you got him doesn't mean he does not require trianing to your specific house. The transition from breeder to home can be very confusing for a pup. You need to be consistant with your demands on him and reward him for pottying in the right place. IMO 9 months seems too young to have free reign of the house. You should have him gated in the room you are in at all times so you can keep a good eye on him to learn his cues to when he needs to potty. If you are not home he should be put in his crate.
You need to treat him as if he was a little puppy again. I don't know if I confine him to his crate all the time, but night is good. I have a poodle who is mostly house trained until she gets to a new house, and she is almost 9yrs old.
This is what I would do. Keep putting him in his crate at night as you have been doing. When he is out use a leash or something to tie him to you, that way he is never out of your sight. Whe is acts like he needs to go out, imed. stop what you are doing and take him outside. He will then relearn and be a great dog. Since he is 9months, it probably wont take very long. Anytime you can't keep your eye on him, put him in his crate. I have used this method for every pup I have ever owned. They go outside during the day, and crates at night. when I am home from work, they get tied to me, although I usually go out side about every 2hrs anyway for a cig. I dont smoke in my house.
