I recently got a Shih Tzu for my mom (who is battling breast cancer) and now my mom has an infection in both of her legs so she cannot take care of her right now and I have her. I just have a couple questions about these little bundles of cuteness. Should you keep their hair but around their eyes? I also noticed that her little eyes seem to water alot, is that normal and if so, watch do you use to clean them? Cheena is also eating her poop. I don't know if this is normal or not because my other dogs have never done that. How do you get them to stop doing that? When she poops outside, my husband and I get her away from it immediately but when she has an accident in the house she turns around and eats it before we can get to it. She is only 11 weeks old. Any help and information on this breed would be greatly appreciated.
You can just put the hair thats going over the eyes into a top knot if you want, or you can trim it. Just be careful. The hair around the eye needs to be trimmed to, where all the eye gunk forms. You can get rid of the eye gunk with warm water and a flea comb. Gently just scoop it out. However I would really get her to a groomer now for a puppy bath and just trim around the face, sanitary, etc. She needs to get used to grooming now. Shih tzu's are dogs that need grooming every 1-2 months for life.
No, its not normal for her to eat poop. Has to do with lack of nutrients or a poor diet. Could also be boredom. Either way, its a behavior that is not normal. What are you feeding her? How old was she when she left her mama?
Thanks for the advise. As for feeding her, I bought IAMS for puppies but she won't eat it. She found my other dogs food and likes it so that is what she has been eating. It is Purina Kibbles and Chunks. One of you asked when she was taken away from her mother, well I got her when she was 10 weeks old. I'm hoping that after my mom's chemo treatments are over she will be able to take care of her. My husky has become extremely jealous and started being destructive and aggressive towards me so I will not be able to keep this sweet little girl, which will break my heart. Thanks again for your help.
Feed her some pineapple...when she poops, it will give it a taste she won't like. There are products which you can add to his food to deter it. Solid Gold makes Seameal which also has nutrients.
Shih-tzus don't have tear ducts so their eyes tend to water. You have to clean around their eyes to prevent infection. Just wipe around his eyes with warm water and a cloth every day should keep them clean.
I just watched a show called 'Dogs with Jobs' and there was this story of this woman who had to be in a wheelchair. She had a papillon which helped her make her bed by pulling the sheets and bringing her the pillows so she can arrange them. This little dog also took the clothes out of the dryer and washer and picked up anything that she dropped. It was really cute and sweet because small dogs aren't known for being service dogs in this sense. Therapy dogs, yes but service dogs no. Service dogs require certain traits but maybe you can look into training your mom's dog to help her. That way, they'll both enjoy each other's company and her dog won't be bored and eat her poop!
In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. ~Edward Hoagland
