I have two Toy Dachshunds. My male is 2 1/2 and my female is 8 months old. We bought (Angel) our female because we wanted to breed them eventually. But I think it may have happend sooner than my Fiance' and I expected. We never noticed if and when she went in heat. She is such a tiny dog so I'm thinking we may have missed it. But here recently her vaginal area has swollen 2 maybe 3 times the size it was and she has nipples. COULD SHE BE PREGNANT? Or does this happen when they go in heat? I have kept and eye out for blood but haven't seen any. How do I know if my baby is pregnant? And what are more signs to tell if she is? Thank you.
When she comes into heat is when the swelling of her backside begins. When the bleeding starts it will last for up to two weeks towards the end of the bleding is when she will normally allow the breeding process to happen. Around 6-8 months is when dogs come into their first heat, but it's always good to wait for atleast the second heat. If they did beed & it was successful then her nipples will swell towards the middle to end of the pregnancy and milk will come from them when squeezed just before she is ready to give birth. The pregnancy is usually 63 days long. So if you don't see any blood soon, then wait 2 months & you'll know!
I would suggest taking your Doxie to your vet for their professional opinion. And please, keep a closer eye on your dogs. I can't over emphasize enough how vigilant a dog owner has to be when they choose to keep their dogs intact.
It is a Responsibility and a serious one at that. Many concerned breeders will require spay/neuter because of such issues over "accidents". They can and do happen. But in many cases they could have been prevented.
