At one time there was a mixed breed show in NYC. It emphasized responsible pet ownership. They gave out award for look a like contests, best kiss, best trick, etc. It was a cute idea, but unfortunately I don't think they hold it any more. I'm sure there are clubs that allow mixed breeds to compete in agility and obedience contests. Conformation dog shows are meant to evaluate breeding stock. Since mixed breeds should be kept as pets and not bred, they can't compete in those shows.
Rott is correct. The typical AKC conformation show is to judge AKC recognized purebreds as to how they conform to their written breed standard. Mixed breeds are not eligible since they are not purebred.
However they are eligible to compete in AKC Agility, Obedience and Rally trials. They must be spayed/neuter and registered with an ILP through AKC.
Con artists that breed these mixed breeds seem to like to assure puppy buyers they will soon be accepted to AKC. But this is a lie and usually nothing more than a selling point.
"However they are eligible to compete in AKC Agility, Obedience and Rally trials. They must be spayed/neuter and registered with an ILP through AKC."
Not so far. If you have an unregistered dog that closely resembles one they register, spay or neuter with pictures you may get an ilp which has been renamed pen. They are talking about mixed breeds in future. It's not yet though. Mixed breeds can't play in the AKC, performance events or not.
AAC, USDAA, CPE, DOCNA and NADAC all let any dog play in their agility events regardless of breed. CARO and the APDT allow any breed to do rally obedience. NAMBR offers all breed tracking and obedience titles.
So there are things one can do with your mixed breed dog, but conformation isn't one of them. You'd have to have there actually be some sort of standard to compare them to.. and for the most part it's people breeding for money who could care less about working towards a goal.
Thanks everyone, I have a pure bred Beagle and was looking for a friend and came across these addorable puggles. The breeder somewhat implied that they were very rare and beautiful to show. So before i spend the moola it is good to know the whole story.
What a crock, sorry for the negativism but that breeder is really telling a bunch of good for nothing lies. Rare? puggles are not rare, for one they are technically mutts, are mutts rare? Even people that consider them a breed dont consider them rare. There are tons of them every where. There are more of them in the US than some purebreds. It irks me that people try to pass them off as some rare new breed. A breed cannot be shown unless there is a standard in which to compare it to. It would be interesting to ask that so called breeder what the standard is for a puggle. Beings they have no trouble lieing about them being rare they would probably lie about a standard too. Anyone claiming that puggles are a new rare breed is not someone you want to deal with even if they also have REAL purebreds.
A Clumber Spaniel is a rare breed, a Swedish Vallhund is a rare breed, I guantee there are more puggles in the US than those two breeds put together.
