Help- my puppy is teething and it hurts. She is only 8 weeks, I know that is young, but she is really starting to hurt. I have tried everything, a ton of chew toys, stern no-s, time outs, natural bitter spray on my hands- nothing is working! Does anyone have any advice?
First if you could not punish the puppy that would be great. The pup is still to young emotionally to handle this. And really does not know what is expected. What I do is I yelp...This does make some dogs get even worse..try it and pay attention to see if it makes the dog more or less. Then if it works I immediatly offer something they can bite. I carry a small stuffed toy with me. This is good because the dog will fall in love with the toy. Then later in the dog's life you can use this as a reward.
I believe a dog's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment he holds dear, is when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-with a ball in his mouth."
She's a cocker spaniel. I tried yelping, it hasn't effected her at all. As for punhishment, she never gets punished. That is a strong word to use and no one "punishes" an 8 week old puppy. If we are refering to time outs as punishments,I don't think ignoring her constitutes punishing a puppy. Thank you for the good advice, as I had raised a cocker before from an early age these methods did work. However, every dog is different and I have exhausted all of the training I received with my first. I'll keeo trying. Thanks again
as soon as a read cocker spaniel, i got worried. I've been biten 5 times so far, 4 of those times were cockers(3 seprate dogs from 3 seprate homes) If your puppy is 8 weeks old and already seperated from her littermates, she has missed out on valuable feedback from sibblings and mother alike, as to where to draw the line between playing and 'oww'. my suggestion, expose her to as many dogs as possably, try to give her that feedback. continue the yelping, and try to keep your voice as high pitch and squecky as you can. It might be possable, that even though ur showering your baby with love, she doesnt think so! =) try to work on giving her a better way to get ur attention. get started on your basic commands, and perhaps have her learn a special trick, such as ringing a bell when she needs to go out. eventually, she'll learn that the best way to get the love she demands, is to listen.
i was attacked by a boxer i keep my distance from that breed now, but yea. when the puppy bites curl the lip in his mouth so his teeth pinch his lip a bit. or watch cearsar milan on the national geographical channelIDK
