Ok last year I put some bedding in the kennel runs it was cedar or pine bedding, the lady I get straw from didnt have any good straw and I couldnt find any straw. Strawberry got these 2 huge bumps the size of a quarter on her hind end one on each side of her tail. The bumps then went down and turned in to holes. It was so nasty. The vet put her on antibiotics and had me wash the holes out each day with viodine soap and then put a topical on it.It cleared up and went away but now.......it seems to be coming back, one of them is open and bleeding. No bedding is being used and she is in the house 24/7 except when on the run to go potty. She has not been kenneled at all since this happnened. The vet had no explanation just said he thought it was fungal or bacteria from the pine/cedar bedding. It cant be that now so what the heck? I called another vet and we are going in on Thursday but it is bugging me bad.Does anyone have any ideas?
I was just googling and it seems that it could be a ruptured or abcess anal glands. Is this not common in apbts because why wouldnt the vet say this? They are directly on each side of her tail and they do ooze stuff and it does stink. From what I have read antibiotics and keeping it clean is what you do so I guess the vet did do that but he didnt mention anything about anal glands. Why would this reoccur? What causes this? I am gonna run back to google now and do some more reading.
Immunique, it could also be fly strike, or myiasis. Did this dog have any kind of diarrhea prior to you seeing these bumps, and then holes? It would have a horrible smell as well. Anal glands will rupture, but usually you'll see the dog scooting along the ground. Have you ever expressed the dog's anal glands before? I should say any of the dogs? Do you see a lot of flies down there where you live?
The only wierd thing is that in all the pics on line the holes are real close to the butt hole,Strawberrys holes are not so close to the butt hole they are at the 3 and 9 oclock position but not touching her butt hole.
No diareah and yes we have flies here but we put stuff around the kennels and also when it gets hot out we have this cream we put on the ears, tail, and forehead of all the dogs so the flies wont bother them. This started when it was cold out and there were no flies out.No I have never expressed any anal glands.Great now your telling me I need to do something with the dogs anal glands and I just kicked out the pool boy...LOL
Do you treat your yard, house, and kennel area with pesticides? Or have someone come out and spray?
Sounds to me like you may have a few spiders roaming. My rottweiler was bitten by a brown recluse spider about 2 years ago. It did the same thing. He had to have surgery to remove the infected tissue, which luckily didn't get to the muscle yet. He would scratch, and then lick at his side. I went and looked and whammo there it was. Fist looked like a swollen circle, about the size of a quarter. He let me shave around it so I could put meds on there and clean it. Within 2 days I suppose, it bursted and the center "fell out". To the vet we went. Keep an eye on the dogs and any children you have.
Heck, I may be wrong, but it sure sounds like the same thing. Do you have any pix of the wound?
If it werent for physics and law enforcement, I'd be unstopable.
Jackie may well be right, but I would check out the side that is not open and oozing. I would first call the vet and ask his opinion, and whether you can do this procedure. The glands are at 4 and 8 o'clock from the anus. You gently insert a gloved lubricated finger into the anus, and feel for a lump. Whe you feel it squeeze it between your inserted finger and a free one, from the out side. Be prepared for the most awful smelling brown liquid to come out, and keep a paper towel handy. If this is the problem, you need amoxicillin, and you also need to express this dog's anal glands on a regular basis. I doubt highly if it's bedding, the position of the lumps and the holes are too much like anal glands. By the way, if the vet says it's ok, I'd get on it, before the other one ruptures. Good luck. Let me know how it goes. I forgot to tell you that you should restrain her head, either by someone holding her, or tying her fairly closely to something. I can only imagine what this feels like. I've done the procedure on a lot of dogs, and they obviously don't like it, but mine are a lot smaller than yours.
I do have spiders around, I will post pics when I get home from work.It is just wierd that there is 2 that look exactly the same one on each side if her butt hole. When they swelled up there was no hair and then like you said they "fell out" it was like holes and it was oozing stuff.None of the other dogs have it I have checked them all over again last night. The kids have no bites on them,I am trying to find more pics of the anal glands (ruptured or abcess)She dont act as if it bothers her now but it looks nasty and it is sure bothering me.I covered it up last night because she wanted in my bed,I uncovered it this morning and she licks at it to clean it.
That's fine, Immunique. I would however, get the vet to show you how to do this, because it's easy, and can save your dogs from needless pain. It is strange that you've never had another dog with the same problem, but some dogs are just more susceptible to anal gland problems. I have one, and I have to check her every month. The others I check every 2 months or so.
We have some black fuzzy thing,Im not sure if we have black widows here but it resembles one. I killed 2 in my house in a total of 2 years.I dont think they are all over my house but I dont know what they are.I have an exterminator come every 3 months for ants but he said when he sprays it will get rid of ants, spiders, flies, fleas and so on.
**edit to add**I googled and we have some wolf spiders and nortern black widows which are not deadly like the regular black widow.
Pen-I think so too, I am gonna call around right now and see who is open untill 6pm or so and just take her in today. You know how the vets are in this area, there is one great one who has a best friend who is a apbt breeder and he is the best but always full because he is the only one in a long distance who does exotics besides the a-hole for the zoo who I took the puppy to when he said "you have to pay first and its just gonna die so whatever" I think that vet dont like apbts or something. I may try to call the breeder and see if he will cal the vet for me and get in that way today. I am gonna do something.
Ok the most expensive vet in town but they will take me at 5:40pm today!!!They are good,i have hard feelings for one vet there but there are others so hopefully I get one I like alot and I will keep going to them.I owe them a bill from when they killed my dog and I refused to pay them for the medical procedure since i payed once and they had to do it again on the prolapsed uterus because it was still hanging out.2nd surgery she died 4 days later. They sent me to collections but didnt notice when I called so maybe its not in the system anymore from 3 years ago.
