Hi there we have had our fur baby for almost a month. I had Rolo neutered last week and it went really well. He is still quite skittish around my husband despite trying all the suggestions we received. We are resolved to wait it out and hope he warms up soon!I was wondering if adding another beagle to the family might help, in the sense of the new pup hopefully liking my husband and Rolo realizing there is nothing to fear. Be honest am I being insane? Will it traumatize him more? BTW the pup is about 9 wks old and a female.
My skittish aussie is not helped by other dogs. She wasn't socialized properly as a puppy, and was horrible scared of men when I got her. My husband drives an 18 wheeler, so he is only home about 4days a month. It took her almost a year to warm up to him, I feel it wouldn't have been so long if he lived at home. He gave her lots of love, feed her, gave her treats, and put her in her crate. It took the time, but she fell in love with him. She still gets a tad upset when he raises his voice, but loves him to death. It only took her a couple of shows to warm up to a judge, and now she does great. She always looks at the judge with that pick me attitude. It isn't easy, and if your beagle has a bad attitude from gentics, there isn't a whole lot you can except give him lots of love and limit the stress. He may never fully warm up to your husband, and if this a really big problem, you might want to contact the breeder you got him from. It just depends on the contract if there was one. Good luck
Personally, I think if you're having problems with one dog, getting a 2nd dog is NOT the answer. It takes time and patience-one month is really not that long a time to work with him. Don't expect miracles.
Ok I listened, I contacted the people I was gonna get the little beagle from and told them I have to focus on right Rolo now. I am unsure of the genetic lineage of my Rolo as he is somewhat of a rescue. He was bought not by myself from a large chain pet store (yuck- I know) he was housed with 8 other pups for 3mths!!!! The lady who bought him was ill and advertised him along with all the bells and whistles from the store. In the interim before I got Rolo a couple who wanted an agility dog took him and attempted to force him to do tricks etc.... Well it flopped and they returned him and took her female instead. So I am sad to think what all my baby has been through. And your right one month isn't a long time.
