I have a 1 year old mutt that I had spayed at 7 months old. She was a happy, healthy dog until we had her spayed. She began to leak urine a lot and it quickly became worse. I was waking up with puddles on the bed in the morning. I took her to the same vet, who ran test (lots of $) and gave me some medicine saying it was probably spay incontinence. It's been about two months now and she has stopped leaking urine and I have stopped giving her the medicine, but over the last month she has quickly gone downhill. She has urinated on the floor twice and the smell is so horrible. I thought the first time that she had expressed her anal glands because it smelled so bad. She drinks a rediculous amount of water daily and I can hear her get up through the night to drink. I am so worried about her. Is it possible that her being spayed was the start of all this? Could they have messed something up? Or is is all just coincedence? I have a contract with this vet and pay monthly for "lower" rates. I feel they are kinda shady and if they did do something wrong I honestly believe they would never tell me and I would be paying a ton of money to fix their problem.

With a bad smell, i would be more worried about a UTI. That is usually were the bad smell comes from. It is possible a bad vet can do a bad job. If she had an underlying problem before she was spayed, The stress could bring it out. I doubt that is the problem. I would try another vet if you can afford it. They also make doggie diapers that are just like baby diapers. Depending on how big she is, it could help you out.

You shouldn't take your dog to a vet you do not trust 100%. I would never go back to a human doctor I had a bad feeling about. Time to get a second opinion.

Jillybean, did the vet not explain spay incontinence to you?
Estrogen is the hormone that determines the tone of the bladder sphincter muscle. As the dog has had her ovaries taken out, she is no longer producing estrogen from them. The adrenal glands do produce a tiny bit, but not enough for proper bladder control. If this was my dog, I would straight out ask the vet if he is treating her with estrogen, because it's given in a very distinct pattern. I would ask for a complete blood panel, and I would ask him if the reason she is drinking so much has anything to do with her adrenal glands or blood sugar. If you really think this is a shady vet, I would take my dog elsewhere immediately. What reasons do you have to say he's shady? (other than your dogs current problems)

Jillybean - Take her to another vet!
Dora (my corgi-mix) also had incontience issues due to an early spay. She is still being weaned from the estrogen, and she started estrogen treatment back in January! Also we were told to restrict her water intake to 2 1/2 cups a day, based on her weight. The treatment did work, where she was leaking comtinously and needing to go out every 1/2 hour in January when the resuce started her treaments, she now can hold her urine as long as 6 hours, no accidents in the house since March. Right now she is going 10 days at a time between pills. But the dog should be on the estrogen for at least a couple months, and then weaned slowly off of it for a period of time to see if she can EVER be taken of the estrogen, my vet says some dogs have to be on a small dose for life. It doesn't sound like this was your experience, so I would try another vet's opinion.
Also Dora was treated for a UTI, I think dogs with this condition are more suscpetable to UTIs since the sphincter is more relaxed? She may need to be treated with antibiotics before trying estrogen treatment. Good Luck.

Jilly,

I echo the idea of having a full blood panet run. That will give you a look into how all the major organs are functioning. I would not give up trusting your vet over this, just yet. The suggestion your vet gave is a common issue. But better to get a broader view of your girl's inner workings with a blood panel.

my vet doesn't like to do spays until the female is at least 8 months old in the small breeds and 12 to 18 months in the large breeds. he says this almost completely eliminates the problems of UTIs and incontinence. he also says he thinks the hormones help the dogs to mature mentally so there are fewer issues with behavior in the adults.

Thanks all of your for so much imput! The vet did say she had spay incontinence and explained it to me, but she isn't leaking anymore. That's what made me think maybe it wasn't spay incontinence. The vet said if it was she would be on the medicine the rest of her life. She was also teasted for a UTI and that test came out negative. I was giving her phenylpropanolamine twice a day for about 2 weeks. I slowly took her off of them (to see if the smell was because of the medicine) and she hasn't had any issues with incontinence.
I go to this vet because I have a contract with them and they are going to take $30 out of my account whether I take her there or not. I don't trust them because I feel the vet was grasping at straws. She wouldn't make eye contact with us when she was telling us what all could be wrong with her. I felt like she didn't know what she was talking about. Her overall presentation was lacking.

Phenylpropanolamine is an antihistamine that is no longer approved for human use, but still used for dogs in veterinary use for urinary incontinence. If your dog is not leaking urine anymore, lets hope it was just the muscle getting adjusted after surgery.
I think your vet was probably worried that she had done something else, but the treatment was what is given usually for this condition. There are a few new drugs to use, but it seems that you don't need any now. I'm glad your little dog is ok now, and hope her good health continues.

She's not okay now :-(. Though the incontenence has stopped, we have bigger problems. She drinks a rediculous amount of water everyday and her urine smells absolutely awful! The first time she did it I thought she had expressed her anal glans...I left the house...it was so bad. I'm so worried they did something to her kidneys or something like that...but how would I ever know or find out?

I'm sorry if I misunderstood. My advice is to get your dog to another vet ASAP and get a CBC, blood chemistry panel, and a urinalysis, which if they are a good vet they will do immediately. Your dog is showing signs of Cushing's syndrome, bladder infection and or diabetes, which are both fairly unusual in such a young dog. The signs though are leading me to think this.
I hope I'm totally wrong, and please let us know how your dog is doing. ((BIG SMOOCH)) for your dog.

I have a year and a half old female queensland mix that I got from the humaine society when she was 12 weeks old. Ever since I've had her she has leaked clear, odorless liquid. She doesnt even know she is leaking it... she lays there and just gets up wet. At first I just thought that she was still potty training which I think that was some of it. But then I realized while staying with my mom after I had my son it was clear fluid since she leaked it on tile and it wasnt colored. So Im not sure what happened... I heard sometimes they mess up the muscles. But unsure how they would treat it. Does anyone know anything over the counter I can give her? We had 4 dogs and are having to down size to one. And as of right now my leaking queensland, Angel, will be the only one left. Was going to keep my dalmation but she has snapped at my son a few times so she is going to be the one to go. Breaks my heart but my son comes first............. if you can help please tell me how !!
