Hello everyone. It's been a very long time since I have been able to visit but I love this place.
I have Yorkie's and they occationally do the cough/chuff spasm thing. My vet tells me not to worry but it is just impossible not to when they fight so hard to try to breath. They are young dogs now (3 and 5 years) and I feel relatively safe but as they get older, will they be able to recover from these episodes?
Apparently this is a yorkie thing. Is there any way I can help them when this happens? Usually it is a reaction from being overly excited but sometimes it comes out of the blue.
If anyone has any experience with this I would truely appreciate your input.
Are you talking about "reverse sneezing"? Where they appear to be having a difficult time when they try to breath in, almost sounds like an ashma attack? I have two Yorkie x Maltese and both of them will do the reverse sneeze thing. Its quite common in small breed dogs. IF this is the case, the only thing I found works like a charm is covering their nostrils for a second or two during an attack. It causes them to take a deep breath in through their mouth and stops the attack immediately.
Thanks so much. I will try that next time! It is a comfort to know that it is a common thing. I know I should trust my vet but you know how it is when they seem so helpless and you don't know what to do.
