my friend has week old puppies and the bitch is unable to feed them. her other female is in good health but she wanted to know if you can actually get the other female to lactate to feed the pups is this even possible? I told her i had no clue and would ask
It has happened, but she needs to be hand feeding them now.If the other female is healthy and old enuff you can set the pups with her and see if she does stsart to make milk. She might make a good surrogate.
It is highly unlikely that a bitch will produce milk for another litter unless she has recently had her own. You cannot just stick another litter of puppies in with her and expect her to start instantly lactating. It is not natural for one dog to feel responsible for another's offspring. It has happened in the past that a lactating mother will care for a litter that is not hers, but she is already lactating and has maternal instincts to help her make the decision. Any old dog off the street will not have the hormones in place to feel the need to care for these puppies. You need to intervene IMMEDIATELY. If they are not getting enough milk from the mother, they will fade quickly. Hand feeding may be the only way to save this litter.
Time for the not so fun task of hand feeding that litter! The other female is not going to produce milk to feed them for you. Start feeding now! It does not take long for pups to become dehydrated and die.
People are like slinky's, not really good for much. But its still fun to push them down the stairs.
