I need some advice. I have a 2 year old chow who is slightly skiddish to begin with but with the fireworks going on in the past few days she is having a very difficult time. Walking her if there is a noise is nearly impossible she starts running in a circle and will not walk forward. It scares me because she is always extremely good on the leash.
Is there anything I should be doing differently? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Don't worry....You are not alone. Fireworks scare the poop out of a lot of dogs. I would say just close the windows and turn on your air. You could try turning on a somewhat loud radio so that the dog can't hear it as much, but there really isn't a whole lot you can do. The noise just really scares them. Maybe other members have other advice. Good luck!
The fireworks started here a few days ago; they come earlier every year. I feel torn between calling the cops and just letting it go. Technically most of them are illegal in the city limits, but I hate to be a party pooper. I'm keeping my dogs in as much as possible for a few days. Maybe you could walk in the morning; I wouldn't think fireworks would be a problem then. Between 9 and 11 my neighborhood is dead; I love it. If the noise bothers then in the house, maybe you can drown it out with music or television.
If you dog is couch potato like my one mini aussie, use cotton ball or ear plugs. It works great. I am in Pa. and fireworks are legal. People started shooting them off about 2 weeks ago, and they scare her to death. I shut my windows, and turned on the air. Then I put cotton balls in her ears. She is on a chain when she is out side, so I dont have to worry about her hearing me to come. It worked great, so I bought some squishy ear plugs from walmart. They stay in better when she shakes. Good luck
