Hi! I've had my beagle now for about 5 months (she is 7months old). When we first took her to the vet when she was 8 weeks, the vet said she was small for her age. SHe i snow 7months and is ten inches and hasn't grown for 2 months... she is 12 pounds, but eats regularly and seems healthy as can be! Will she start growing again? or is she a runt?
She does sound small for her age/breed. Only a physic could answer if she will grow to be a regular size. By her track record one could assume that she will remain small, but stranger things have happened. Just love her for who she is and since you say she is perfectly healthy , don't worry about her size. Love comes in all shapes and sizes.
It may have been breed that way. My g-pa has small beagles that he intentionally buys small for rabbit hunting and then normal size ones which look big compared to the small ones for raccoon hunting. Something about the small ones and the rabbit holes, I guess they can fit in there better (maybe)
She is still a puppy and has some growing to do. AKC recognizes beagles as 13" and 15" depending on their height. UKC states that the beagle is not to be over 15" (measure the highest point of the shoulders also known as withers). I wouldn't worry about her size unless you were hoping for her to become a 15" beagle and even that is still possible. Most hounds grow tall first until they are about a year old, then put on weight so she should still be growing taller at 7 months.
