I am considering purchasing an adult standard poodle. I have a few questions for poodle owners. First, I have pretty severe pet allergies. Is it true that this breed will cause me no problems? Second, I would like to keep the dog inside but do not want a house that smells like "dog". I have heard that this breed does not smell but this is hard to believe... THANKS for all response! I appreciate your honest answers!
If you are going to leave the dog outside because you don't want your house to smell, DON'T GET A DOG. Some people can be allergic to poodles. If your allergies are severe, you may want to spend time with one, reallly petting and hugging him to see if you have a reaction. I am not sure exactly what kind of smell you are refering to, if you keep them groomed and clean I don't really smell any dog. If they get wet and dirty, then yes they smell like a dirty dog. A poodle is mostly an inside dog, and really like the companionship of their owners. Leaving any dog to live outside is cruel, get a statue instead!!!!
Poodles are DEFINITLY INSIDE dogs!!! I have 2 Standards that live in my home as well as my Toys. They don't have a normal dog smell, they have their own smell and they of course have to be bathed regularly just like any other breed, plus you have the monthly grooming to keep in mind. I would suggest spending time with the dog BEFORE you get it to make sure it does not bother your allergies, alot of people with allergies can be around Poodles without a problem but some cannot so you want to find out how you react BEFORE you get the dog.
It is the protein in saliva that triggers an allergic reaction in most people, if you are trying to avoid problems with allergies you need to spend time with the specific dog you want as another dog of the same breed may not cause a reaction. It has nothing to do with whether a dog is long or short haired, sheds greatly or very little. I have severe allergies and asthma and my husband has emphasema and most of our Bullmastiffs do not cause problems but on occasion we have taken in a rescue that has bothered one or both of us.I also do petsitting in my home and have contact with a variety of breeds , some dogs bother me and I have to take more allergy medicine while they are here. We have a HEPA air cleaner running constantly, all hard surface flooring and mop or vacuum daily.
