My 10 month old shih tzu has been house (potty) trained for a few months, but yesterday he had a pee accident in the house and today he pooped in my son's room. I'm wondering if anyone would know why he is suddenly acting like he doesn't know to go outside. We have a doggy door, so it's not that he couldn't get out. He is crate trained at night and has not been sleeping well lately either; waking up at night, tossing and turning in his crate.
Does anyone have any advice? The only thing I can think of is to start training him again by taking him out every hour or so, and praising him when he's done well. Is there anything I'm missing? Thanks in advance.
I feel your pain...my dog started doing it while my husband was 1/2 way through with a deployment, but he was 2 years old when he started, still doing it. I have asked my vet about it and they and other sources told me that it maybe a dominance thing because we have another dog (she is spayed). It is very annoying to have to clean up after a grown dog, especially when they were just outside.
This happened to me with my mix - a behaviorist on the radio explained it and when I thought about it, he was right Dogs will poop in the house to leave their scent when they think someone (in my case, me) is lost. This pooping thing is done so that you, being a part of their pack, will find your way home. My dog did it twice in one day, when I had been gone overnight. M y husband was none too happy, but at least he cleaned it and not me!! So, maybe your son was gone for a long time, and the dog pooped to leave his scent so your son would find his way home. Makes sene to the dog.
