My family is considering the adoption of a male, 4 mo old sharpei/terrier mix. According to his size (4 mo old-30 lbs), I am assuming the terrier portion of this dog is pit. Is there any advice that can be offered regarding this specific breed combination? I have a 4 year old son, and the two of them played extremely well together at the adoption agency. I am unfamiliar with these two breeds and only know the stereotypes...however, my son is most important and I do not want to put my family into a difficult situation by adopting an aggressive dog. Was found at 3 weeks old and has been fostered wonderfully...potty trained, crate trained, knows sit, no, and down. We would do obedience class of course and he would be exposed to different dogs/people as we like to walk in the neighborhood.
Another concern I have is that he doesn't want you to come over his eyes and pet his head from the front...from the back he does not mind. He does not become aggressive when you approach him this way, but just looks at your hand and backs up. I may be a paranoid momma, but I just don't want my son to be in any danger.
Any advice anyone can offer about the expected temperament of this dog is greatly appreciated!
I have heard that the Sharpei can be a bit stand offish with strangers, but this little guy is pretty young. I would have no qualms at all about rescuing him. He will be a very strong dog, with a lot of muscle and power; so you will have to be prepared to deal with that. I would think the backing up action when you approach him is simply an instinct...you're big, and he may feel a little overwhelmed and threatened, plus you never know if he's head shy from former abuse. The way I would approach this dog, is down in a shorter stance, kind of with one knee up, and one down, and let him come to you. I think he'll be an absolutely wonderful dog. The APBT is a fantastic dog, very affectionate, and great with children. If you get him, you will have to think about obedience, and then possibly agility, to keep him busy. I would join a local kennel club, and have fun with him. Good luck!
I had a sharpei/pit mix and he was the smartest dog I ever had. He was wonderfull with all kids and other animals. He did have ALOT of energy. If he could escape he would run faster than any dog I have ever seen run,no one could catch him, he would come back home in a couple hours. One time I was out searching for him and he was on the porch of our old house at the door waiting. When I got pregnant he became extremly protective of me like he knew, that is the only time he ever acted up towards people and it was men and only if my fiance was not home he would not let any man in the house at all even if he had seen them 100 times before but the minute my fiance was home he was fine and didnt care if the same person came in or not.He was wonderfull.Be ready for lots of walks.O yeah in the summer his skin use to peel and get flaky in the wrinkles.
