Hello everyone. Just a couple things. I have an 11 wk old collie/lab. I just want to make sure I am on the right track. I take him out every two hours even into the night. He still has accidents and when he does i pick him up and take him out side and tell him peepee. When he goes outside usually in the designated spot i clap, say good boy and give him lots of hugs and kisses. I am wanting to get him used to a kennel as I go to bed fairly early and my husband does not get home until after midnight. I take him out before I go to bed, but to prevent accidents in the four hours or so before husband gets home i would like to crate him, but am not sure how to go about it. I suspect he is going to howl and whimper and whine most of the time. Am I on the right track?
thanks for the advice. It actually went well. he whimpered for about five minutes then went to sleep. Husband let him out when he got home from work, took him outside so he could do his business then put him back in the crate when he went to bed. I came down about two thirty and took him out about three thirty or so, he slept the rest of the night in the crate and no crying. he actually went back in on his own today. now just have to work on the peeing in the house.
When you are ready to put him to bed, throw some small treats into the crate and say 'crate'. That way, he'll learn the command 'crate' telling him to go to his crate and he'll associate treats with his crate. You can also cover the crate with a blanket. If he whines, ignore him and then treat him when he is quiet for a few seconds. At first, you can put your fingers in between the bars to let him know you are there but eventually, he'll learn to love the crate.
In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. ~Edward Hoagland
