I found someone to house sit and watch my dog and cats for the weekend so we can go away with the girls....How much do you pay someone to stay in your house and take care of your animals? Help me please...I don't want to go over or underboard...
My friend son (19 no job) would stay in my house once in a while so I go to dog shows. I would provide food and drink for him, as he had no transportation, and paid him about $25 a day. Usually I would pick him up on friday evening, and take him home on sunday evening, or monday morning. I would give $50-$60. I think it really depends on where you live, and how much a kennel would cost.
Ask her up front what she feels a reasonable fee would be, and if you feel its fair, then you are set. You want to be sure to establish the fee up front so that there are no hard feelings later. When you get home and everything is how you left it and you feel she did a good job, you could add a tip to the deal.

I am a total loser when it comes to confronting someone like that. I work with her mom...She is 24. A college student and I am letting her boyfriend stay with her. They are allowed to use the pool/hot tub...I hope it will be nice for them, they both have roommates and will enjoy quiet time. I might ask her mom what she thinks is fair. I know she house sits for her mom for overnight things, but I don't think her mom pays her. I need to find out if she has to drive to work or not b/c I want to include gas money...I guess I will ask her mom b/c I am a big chicken....ha ha...
well as someone had said that it really depends on where you live and how much they would charge you a day at a kennal. my daughter pet sat three yorkies for 4 days and in those 4 days she had to walk them twice a day stay at their house for 3 hours everytime she was there and feed them twice a day as well when they paid her they gave her 30 bucks! and she was very upset that i made her stay home all week from friends houses to take care of these dogs and then she got paid that little. and really what im getting at is talk to him ahead of time and reason what you both think would be a fair payment.
I would be upset with just $30 too!! It's not easy always taking care of other people's animals! I would say about $30 to $35 a day is reasonable. If you found an exceptional job was done, add another $20 on top of that (for the whole period).

Wow! Your daughter got paid $30 for 4 days? That's a lot! My first time ever housesitting was for some church friend's of my parents. I was there 8 days. Their house was a total complete pigsty. My first night there I came over after my night class. I was up til 2am just cleaning it to a point that I could just go to bed. OMG it was disgusting. I was a poor starving college student at the time...they left me with a bag of rice, a can of corn and some expired milk. It was horrible. In the end, they didn't pay me a dime! That didn't happen again.
I've also housesat for some friends. They have two dogs that are super sweet. Their house feels like a bed and breakfast in the mountains, and they actually have food in their fridge, and its super clean. It feels like going on vacation. They pay $30 a day plus leave money for food and entertainment.
Even if you are on the right track, you will still get run over if you just sit there. (Will Rogers)
This is just my opinion and I understand not wanting to discuss money with people, but I suggest speaking with her yourself. So far people have agreed 25-30 is great starting point, so maybe start from there and see what her thoughts are. I noticed she's 24 (not far from my age) and at that age I'd want to negotiate my wages.
Besides, it seems like they'll have a pretty nice set up while you're away, so it shouldn't be too bad
Well, we are back...the house was just as we left it...I left her $75 for 2 nights...we have 2 cats and a dog. She was extremely pleased, and her mom even called me and said we paid her very well if not too much...I told her mom I wanted to make sure I included enough for anything she wanted and gas...Her mom was boards her dog at a place around here for only $15 per night..So, I felt that was fair price. She left me a note saying she would love to do it again anytime...I think it went well. I would rather pay very well and know my babies are taken care of....Thanks for the comments...
MAxpup, I think You payed her very well. I'm a teenager, so getting payed $75 watching pets overnight and haveing access to hot tub etc, I say thats an extremely good deal, I would be rich for my age :)
Maxpup, I think that was a good price too :) We usually have a friend of ours stay in our house and house sit and we actually don't pay her anything. BUT, my house is closer to her work than hers and she likes to get away and have "me" time, as she calls it! lol! And, she also drops her dog off here, for "playdates" when she goes away, as her dog is Tanks brother, so all in all, we have a good arrangement ;)
