My dogs Syllvia, Pudgie, and Ladey are biting their nails, and constantly licking them. What does this mean?? They got them cut, and they continue to do the biting at the nails. Can anyone suggest any advice for what I should do next please.
My Chows have done this from time to time. With my last one, the vet said it was probably allergies, and I could give him 1 Benadryl, but he weighed about 55 pounds. I am taking my current chow to the vet today, he's doing the same thing, plus pulling the hair out of his tail and digging around his ears. Over a phone call with the vet, they said it was probably allergies, but I'm taking him in to check that it's not something more than that. Call your vet and see what they recommend. My vet said it's a common problem right now in my area, but I live in a area wherer allergies are terribel for people and pets. Good Luck!
Just an update...I took my dog to the vet. He said it was allergies, and gave me medication to us as needed. I'm in OH, and he said allergy season for dogs is usually the same for people, around here, that's April to September! Good Luck!
Sunny our lab pit mix chews on her nais also. We keep them trimmed and filed. She doesn't have allergies. This is never a huge problem with her, she doesn't chew them to the point where they are splintered or hurting herself. We just kind of figured our dog was pleasantly unusual in yet another way and let it be. Of course she's done this since we've had her as a puppy. If your dogs just started it that might be different. If they aren't hurting themselves or splintering their nails they might just be pulling off the gunk that gets in there when they step outside. (ie mud, grass, pollen) Or they might just be like our dog and like chewing on their nails.
Allergies are insane here right now too! Ugh! I've seen so many allergy dogs at the clinic lately. Poor things! I'm even having trouble myself. My dog bites her nails, but not to the point of making them raw or anything...she's just a nail chewer! I tell her its un-lady like, but she doesn't listen! :)
