An opportunity as presented itself for us to get a 6 week old lab, I am concered 1st of all because I have a 2 yr child, but it sounds like from what I have read they are good with children my second concern is I have 2 cats, Does anyone know if Labs are good with other animals specifically cats? Thanks in advance for your input.
6 weeks is too young. In fact, in a lot of states, it's actually illegal to sell a pup that young. One reason not to get a pup at that age is because they learn bite inhibition from mom/littermates around 6-8 weeks. So if you get one younger than that (especially a mouthy breed like a lab!) you'll have a harder time training it not to bite.
That being said, they are a good breed around children. However, since your child is only 2-keep in mind, the pup will grow fast! In no time at all, the pup will be large enough to knock your child over. Just something to think about.
As far as cats, most pups can be trained to get along with cats. I wouldn't worry too much about that.
Thanks for the information...The story I am getting from this dog we have been offered is the mother wanted nothing to do with her 8 pups after 2 weeks so they started finding homes for these pups. This little pup we have been offered was said to be put with a family who abandoned her for 4 days with no food, or water while they went on a weekend trip so a co-worker has taken this pup in temporarily and is trying to find it a good home. I had a collie growing up but am not sure with working full time, raising a toddler and trying for more children if this is the right time to start with a pup? Having a hard time deciding and my response is needed tomorrow:(. Thanks again for your input.
