Hi everyone... my first visit here! I have a 2 year old standard poodle spayed female (she's the runt, so she only about 30 pounds). Very healthy and lively, but very thin. I can't seem to find a dog food that she really likes. Any ideas what I can feed her to fatten her up?
What foods have you tried? There are a lot of good ones out there.
Natural Balance (my dogs love the Duck and Potato formula) Solid Gold Canidae Innova Wellness
Just to name a few. These are more holistic foods, without all the fillers and by products. They are higher in protein and nutrients rather than a bunch of stuff you can't recognize as ingredients. When I first got my dog she was thin and had a broken hip. (she was a rescue brought in to our clinic, had been hit by a car). It took her a long time to build muscle in her leg again. I had her on Science Diet and her poops were loose, and she wasn't getting better. It was after I changed her to Solid Gold that I really started to see a difference in her muscle tone. She's now a healthy 73 lbs, lean and has well defined muscle tone. You wouldn't even know she'd ever had a broken hip. She runs like a dog with a normal hip. Just remember every dog is different and will respond differently to different types of foods. Just stick with the higher quality foods.
I would definitely rule out health issues by doing a good workup on her at your vets office if you haven't already. But if everything is normal maybe she's not really matured enough to fill out. It takes the larger breeds a little bit longer to fill out than the smaller ones. Anyway, good luck! I hope you find one that suits her!
