Our Wire Haired Fox is 6 years old. For the past 3 years he's had an intermitant skin complaint. He scratches and nibbles at the affected areas until he has no hair in that area and it looks really sore. The vet has had him on steroids. The irritation seems a little better whilst he's on his pills but soon reappears when he stops. The steroids make him fatter and thirsty. he looks really unwell. what can we do???
If this was my dog I would try to get to the root of the problem, instead of dosing him with prednisone. I suggest a new vet, and if you have not already done so ask for a skin scraping a complete blood panel, and a reference to a dermatologist, failing any concrete diagnosis from the new vet. What are you feeding your dog? Good luck.
