I have been reading all the threads about dog food and thier ingredients & im lost what should i be feeding princess who is 7 yrs old pitt/lab mix, she is a notorious finicky eater suggestions on what i should i be lookin 4? the food she eats now gives her the worst smelling gas. and i heard some of you mentioning feeding your dog raw what is that?
tianna, there is plenty of information about raw food diets for dogs on the internet, here is one link http://www.njboxers.com/faqs.htm but you can find many others. Otherwise you could discuss your dogs diet with your vet. Dogs are naturally meat eaters, perhaps the dog food you are feeding him is of poor quality (you didn't specify). If you are unwilling to switch to a 100% raw diet, combining raw with commercial food would be better than nothing. If buying commercial foods check the label for the ingredients to avoid those with a high content grain content.
The best thing to feed a picky eater is a really high quality food. They need to eat less quantity wise, so you aren't having to force feed so many "cups" of food to them. I'd get something like Innova, Merricks, Nature's Logic... dry kibble and also pick up some canned food. Mix 1 teaspoon of the canned food and a little warm water in with her food.
Most dogs will not starve themselves. Don't free feed. Give her scheduled meal times, leave the food down for 20-30 minutes and pick it back up. She'll get the point very quickly. It's also a good idea to feed her in a crate where she HAS to focus on her food and can't get distracted playing or wandering around.
Most dogs also REALLY like the better quality foods as they smell and taste more like real meat. I put one of my picky eaters on the Innova EVO and within 2 weeks he was eating like a chow hound. He got SO excited just by the idea of his food because he liked it so much.
You WILL spend more per pound/per bag. But you have to feed a lot less, so in the course of a week/month you'll end up spending about the same in the long run. Where as a 40 lbs bag of Iams would last you a month, a 30 lb bag of Innova would last you 6-8 weeks.
You want very few grains in the dog food and lots of meat - especially in the first 5-6 ingredients. Things like Brown Rice, Barley, Oatmeal, and potatoes are preferable grain/carb sources. Corn and white rice are "okay" - but you want to see them sparingly used and they shouldn't be in the first 2-4 ingredients. Dogs are carnavores. They do best on protein based diets - NOT grain based diets. Which is why foods that list Corn as the first or second ingredient are considered "bad".
