Has anyone ever heard of a female not wanting to breed ever. I have a male and female Akita (both going on 7yrs) who have not been fixed and that have never mated. I've had both since they were 6mnths (male) and 4mnths (female)... for whatever reason whenever she is in season, she has never allowed my male to mount her, and I'm starting to think he could care less.
Now that they are 7 years old, I would get them both neutered and spayed. It could be dangerous now for your female to become pregnant, and they are both at higher risk for testicular and uterine cancer, as intact dogs, not being bred. It's quite unusual, I must say, but maybe there is a physical reason in either dog which has prevented the breeding all this time. Good luck with them.
Thanks for the advice. I've been told (years ago) that if you don't get a female fixed in her younger years, then she can actually have more complications if its done later. Although I still keep them apart when she's in season, she still shows no interest. The only time my male has come close, he had mounted her but from the side. Think of the letter "t" so overall he was hitting fur and air, I think that may have been her first time in heat.
Definatly fix them. It is way to risky to breed at this age as far as I am concerned. If you are thinking this is the first heat, then my guess is she has had silent heats and is probably a low hormone bitch. That would explain why the male has never had any interest. It is also possible he just doesn't know what to do, I have seen that in different breeds also. Most of the breeding bitches I have seen if they are fully ready to breed, and the male isn't doing his job, the bitch will mount him. I am going to guess it was never ment to happen. Get them altered, and let them enjoy the rest of their lives.
Thank you to all of you who responded. As for some of the options and questions asked. They have always been inside dogs, and I have no intention of breeding them now. I just found it odd that she never showed any interest. As for Anubis (my male) he has always been on the "prowl" but anytime he would come around, she would just sit down and blow him off. Her heat cycles are pretty normal... every six months or so. Even now when she goes into season I keep them separate from each other until she's done. As for the only time Anubis has ever really attempted, that was her first heat several years ago.
