Hello everyone, I have a 2 year old yorkie, when I got him at 9 weeks he weighed 5lbs. now he weighs a whopping 19.5 lbs. He full bred, I have his papers. both his dog parents were around 7-9 lbs. whom I saw as well. He is very cute but his ears never did stand upright even though I taped them. He is very hyper, loves to play . He barks all the time at anything which I would love to get him to not do AS MUCH. He is always stealing anything he gets his paws/mouth on. I swear it is like having a 2 year old child. Just wondering if anyone else has large yorkies and what they have done for behavior.
What registry is he registered under, and where did you buy him? I have bred 1 dog 4 pounds over standard, once. I find it hard to believe that this dog is a pure bred registered Yorkie when he is pretty well 3 times the normal size. Sorry, just my opinion.
As long as he's healthy and not overweight, he's not to big for a neutered pet. The yorkie standard says, "under 7 pounds." He could be a mix(papers can be forged) or he might just be out of standard. Where did you get him? It's not unusual for puppymillers to breed oversize toy dogs b/c they welp more puppies with fewer complications. They also add different larger breeds in their lines for the same reason. They are a few unscrupulous Maltese breeders who breed malts to Westies or Bichons to get bigger litters. My malt is just under 10lbs and I'm pretty sure he's purebred. (Maltese are supposed to be under 7lbs too.)
I got him from a private owner in Utah. I went to her home to see the mother and father dog first. The other dogs in the litter were not this big but were already spoken for. She said she wanted to breed a bigger sturdier yorkie that would not have a lot of complications with their bones. She had about 10 adult yorkies and all were small. Mine probably just got the big gene?
I just moved and can't find the papers, can't remember what was on it. I don't show him he is only a pet. He has a great stance though. I wish he were smaller but I still love him he has a great personality and some not so great. I have tried doggie training to try to help with some of his unwanted behaviors. But he is stubborn and does not listen even though I know he can hear me. Just wondering if anyone has any tips on training yorkies! I would love to show you more of him but I don't know how to insert pictures into this message.? I tried and it won't work, any sugg?
It could just be complete fluke but I dont know for sure. I had a litter once that should have been some awesome pups and both the parents were on the large size of standard at 28 pounds and they had to be exercised to stay their. I kept a puppy that looked to be a winner as a pup but to look at her now I question what in the world went wrong in the genetics of that dog. She is a year old and only weighs 11 pounds and does not look as though she will grow anymore. Her mother is almost 3 times her size. Not to mention her coat is one of the worst I have seen on a Corgi. She looks like a messed up pomeranian and I know who her parents are without a doubt. I think it was just a bad deal of genetics. The mother has produced several outstanding pups in the past but bred to a different male.
