He's been like this ever since he was a baby but i never thought it was an issue until now. He is constantly wanting to play, i know you might say that he's young and active, but i don't think that's the issue anymore. We go out for walks and we have play sessions. The problem is that he doesn't let me sit down. He's constantly looking for attention. he doesn't just want me to hug and pet him, he's always standing there with a toy. If i ignore him he will start whining.
I love my dog to pieces, i'm definately not complaining. However, i really want to know if im doing something wrong and how should I respond to this needy behaviour. Please help!!!
I have a friend that taught his dog to fetch a ball. He never taught him how to stop playing though, and now all the time the dog wants to play. The problem with his dog is that he is the alpha in that house. My friend never played the alpha role and now the dog owns the house and decides what is done and when. My friend doesn't help either because whenever the dog wants to play, he plays with him.
My Maltese is the same way. Toy dogs were bred for the sole purpose of companionship, hence the nickname lapdogs. I think it gets a little better with age. Bailey is no where near as clingy as he was when I got him, eight years ago. Working on obediance might encourage more independence and confidence.
This a huge problem with alot of owners, they indulge their dogs with playing and attenion all the time.So what happens, the dog never learns how to entertain him or herself. Buy smokie bones that he can chew on his own, and praise him for chewing on the bone. Buy toys that will keep him busy, I love the tricky treat ball.
When I look up into the sky, I think to myself, Wheres the ceiling?
