We picked Keeta up from the vets this morning. She is doing great! The vet said everything went well during surgery. I am just so happy that she is okay. The et showed us pics from surgery and it looked exactly like it did on the internet. She is no eating again and no mre diharea (sp). But, she is now a conehead. lol she hates it.
A Day To Remember: For Those Who Have Heart is im stores NOWWW!!!!!!
You're right, Pedigree is crap, but you could feed her a few things to boost her up, now that she's had surgery. Small amounts of hamburger, actually any meat that she's not allergic to, brown rice (long grain) eggs, plain yoghurt (not too much, a tablespoon at a time maybe, and any vegetables or fruit that she likes (no grapes or raisins). Those foods will help her get better quicker, and boost her immune system. You could also add some fish oil to her diet, full of omega 3's and 6's. Good luck to you and your little dog. I'm so glad you had the surgery done.
Not to be extremely rude, but I -am- going to be blunt. Most of us don't 'think' it's crap, we KNOW it's crap. If you want more years with a healthier/happier dog, you should consider changing that. There is absolutely no nutrition in pedigree. That's like eating rice, flour and corn meal your entire life. I wouldn't think a humans health would be very good based on a diet like that, and neither is a dogs. You need a food with quality MEAT, not the fillers. When you feed your dog pedigree you're feeding it by products. Which includes cow hooves and bird feathers.
We have tried other foods, she doesn't like them. She isvery picky and she likes pedigree, so we are sticking with it. We have tried her on Wellness, she liked it for 3 days. We tried her on nutro liked it for a few days. We can't afford to keep trying different foods, then having her not like it.
shelties=love, it seems that your dog has you exactly where she wants you. It's nature to eat, no animal will starve itself. Believe me, if you leave the food down for more than 3 days.. and don't give her access to any other food/treat she will give in and eat it. You're alpha, not her. I do understand the concept of puppy eyes, and worrying about your dog 'being hungry'.. but honestly in the long run you would be extremely glad that you stuck with it. I'm not saying never give her a treat or two, just don't give them to her while trying to get her used to the new food. My dog doesn't particularly enjoy the taste of Nutro Natural.. but she eats it to survive. When I go to my friends house (whom also feeds pedigree), Duchess will run to the bowl and pig out. Why? because they put so much extra things in the pedigree to make it unhealthy.. but it smells better. It's just like people.. of course a pizza and a milkshake taste better than a salad and a grapefruit. That doesn't mean that we should always eat the first option, but eat the second one and live a healthier/longer life. Make sense?
Yea, I know that a dog will not starve. But, after this incident, I'm not going to take that chance anymore. That whole week of not eating, took her down and she was so week, she was also sick but she was mostly weak from not eating. And if I she was not to like the new food we give her and for her not to eat for a few days, I have other dogs and she would have no problem eating their food. I like feeding them Pedigree and I am comfortable with it, and I don't care that you or anyone else doesn't like it. It is my decision and I'm not changing it. My dogs are healthy for the most part, and Keeta has eaten Pedigree her whole life. And the Pyometra had nothing to do with food, it happened because we never got her fixed.
' I like feeding them Pedigree and I am comfortable with it, and I don't care that you or anyone else doesn't like it. It is my decision and I'm not changing it. My dogs are healthy for the most part, and Keeta has eaten Pedigree her whole life.'
You like feeding your dogs Pedigree? I'm interested in why. You say your dogs are healthy, 'for the most part', what does that mean? Have you actually read the ingredients in the food you are feeding? The only reason your dogs like it, is because it's sprayed with fat from restaurant fryers, and rendered carcasses. You could very easily switch your dogs to a healthy food, by putting a bit of plain yoghurt on it, which your dog with the Pyometra should have anyway. She's getting antibiotics, but no probiotics. Please give it some more thought.
Beleive me, if I was rich or at least had more money, I would definatly give them better foods. But, I am not the one who brings the money in, thats not my decision. I tell my mom oh lets try this one, but then she just says no, its too much money for all three of them. And when I say that my dogs are healthy for the most part I mean that they don't have any diseases like diabetes, cancer, ect. And they all get vet checked and come out good. And Keeta the one with pyometra, has been getting eggs, and other good tufff for her. I can't give her yogurt, or any thing like that, she doesn't like it. And I have a hard enough time getting her pill in everyday, she is smart she knows when I'm gonna give it to her.
shelties=love, I understand you have no real control over what food you buy. Perhaps though you could mention to your Mom that the cheap food is full of fillers, that's why you have those large amounts of poop to shovel up! I'm not trying to be mean. Good food , in the long run is cheaper than the lower quality, because it is meat based, not grain based, therefore the dog can make more use of the food. Will your little dog eat cottage cheese? Good luck and take care.
Well I was looking at Petsmart.com and I saw a food. Is Authority a descent brand, it was the cheapest high quality food I could find. I did some math and found out that it is cheaper to feed that then we do Pedigree. But, only if they all get adult formula, which is okay. And no I don't think she will like cottage cheese but if we have any I will try.
I can't afford to feed my dogs the expensive stuff either "shelties=love". They get Alpo and usually "Ol' Roy" which I KNOW is "crap" but they like it. To make up for them eating "crap" they get some bites of meat from our human meals and usually some vegetables too. If they had their way they would eat only human food. The dog food companies know there are people out here who can't afford the "Iams" and "Purina"... if they cared about our animals they wouldn't make it so expensive.
Iams and Purina are crap too... slightly better crap than Pedigree - but still crap (actually - Dog Chow and Pedigree are probably the same food...).
I'm having this same arguement with my brother and his wife right now... You don't save money feeding Alpo or Pedigree. They have to eat so much more kibble in order to get even close to the nutritional value they need to be healthy. They shed more because their bodies can't sustain a healthy coat. Their teeth build up tartar and plaque more heavily because of the fats sprayed on the cheap foods. This either means expensive dental cleaning, or your dog is going to have heart, liver, or kidney problems from the bacteria in the tarter building up in their blood stream.
We fed our first Sheltie Kibbles n' Bits and Gravy Train - because he liked it. He died at 10 years of age with heart failure - most likely because his teeth were bad.
I've fed Iams. I've fed Science Diet. I'm currently feeding a mix of Chicken Soup, Canidae, and EVO (depending on the individual dog - not every dog does well on every food). I've fed probably 4-5 other brands along the way. The difference in my dogs from "crap" to the better quality stuff is insane - and I'm actually not spending more on dog food "per month".
Did Kee Kee eat the Wellness at all? Or did she just not eat as much of it - because from Pedigree to Wellness, she would actually eat probably 1/2 as much kibble (so if she's getting 2 cups a day on Pedigree - she'd get about 1 cup a day on Wellness - or less.
And Pedigree is essentially like if you ate McDonald's french fries every meal. Some guy already proved you can't live off of McDonald's food an be healthy. Same goes for a dog. If you offer a 5 year old child french fries or pot roast - they'll pick the french fries hands down. You can't let your dog tell YOU what it's eating...
My dogs must be food snobs. Since I started feeding better food... I ran out of dog food and had to buy a bag or regular Diamond one day. I mixed it in with the little bit of Canidae I had left... they picked out the Canidae and left the Diamond in the bottom of the bowl... :) Though I also may have the only dogs that thing Beggin' Strips are crap also... They LOVE Old Mother Hubbard biscuits though...
And I'm certainly not rich. Buying dog food stretches my budget every month. I haven't bought a new pair of jeans in 2 years and I'm wearing the same sneakers I bought 3 years ago. But my dogs always get good food and their Frontline and Interceptor. If I can't provide that - I shouldn't have dogs.
Authority would be a step or two up from Pedigree. It's not a great food - but it's better than Pedigree. Still too much filler.
Here's the thing - Pedigree is telling you to feed a 25-50 lb dog 2-3 1/2 cups of food a day.
Authority is say 1 1/2-3 cups a day.
Canidae or Innova says 1-2 cups for an ACTIVE dog. If you have a house dog who gets limited excercise they say 1/2-1 cup.
Pose the question to your Mom - if a dog is 25 lbs... you can feed 2 cups, 1 1/2 cups, or 3/4 of a cup of food a day... then look at the prices on the bags or "per pound".
I'm paying about $38-39 for a 35 lb bag of Canidae right now. Authority is about $35 for 35 lbs. I haven't the foggiest idea what a bag of Pedigree is running right now - but it would have to be less than $17 for 35 lbs or $20 for 40 lbs for you to even KIND OF be saving any more in the long run.
Heck, regular Diamond is a better food - the Diamond Naturals is MUCH better (in fact, I like it better ingredient wise than Authority). A 40 lb bag of Diamond Naturals would run me about $27 (my vet sells Diamond as well as Innova, Chicken Soup, California Natural...). Have you checked into finding some place that sells Diamond? If you're on a budget and trying to convince Mom to feed better food... start with something like that if she won't try something more expensive.
And absolutely don't let your dog dictate what they will or won't eat. Kee Kee will be healthier. Put a little warm water on her food, or spring for some plain, non fat yogurt and put that over the new food if she's being picky. Over 2-3 weeks, put less water and yogurt on the food and she'll eventually develope a taste for it. The yogurt would be good for her right now anyway if she's on antibiotics (they kill all the bacteria in her body - which means the good stuff too - so a teaspoon of yogurt over her food would help keep her digestive system normal).
Well if Authority is better then Pedigree, I'm gonna do that. Because for a week of food there was a $4-$5 difference in price. And thats pretty good, so I showed my mom. And she said we will but 1 can of it and a bag to test it out, see if they like it. I would mix their dry food with the wet, because now they get no dry food in their diet.
