Just today my 3 month old Cavi puppy is having eye issues. This morning he was fine, but at lunch I went home to feed him and he's squinting, the white part is pinkish/red and he rubs it with his paw. No swelling or anything like that. I tried cleaning it gently with a warm cloth but he cries when I do this (I clean his eyes often, never any crying). Also when he rubs them with his paw, he cries. The soonest I can get him in to the vet is tomorrow afternoon. Any ideas what this might be? Please help! Thanks.
You might try some visine in his eye, there could be dirt in a place that you're not seeing.. doing this will flush it out. Another way to flush it out, although not as humane is to just hold the little buggers eye open for a good 30 seconds. It will begin to water, and ultimately if it's dirt it will come out. Couldn't hurt to try.
Have you taken a close look at your little dog's lower eyelashes, and eyelids? There is a condition called entropion, where the eyelid rolls in, and the lashes irritate the eye. I hope he just has a piece of dust in his eye. I would flush the eye as much as you and he can stand it. I hope you have good news at the vet tomorrow.
I'm not so sure about using Visine. What I've been told is, Visine is simply a formula to get the "red" out of your eyes-it's not actually therapeutic. And especially on a puppy-I just wouldn't want to risk a bad reaction. The eyes are so sensitive, I would never mess with them, anyway. I'd be going straight to the vet. Hope your puppy is ok-good luck!
My vet actually recommended Visine for use after mowing my yard. Whenever my dogs go outside, it's almost inevitable that they get the mowed grass into their eyes once in awhile. It's never harmed my dogs, but to each their own. She's welcome to call her vet and ask about it before using it if she would feel more comfortable. Notice I didn't recommend it for pain/healing, anyways. I recommended it to flush the eye. :D
