What game will you be hunting? A lot of your training will depend on the game. Have you hunted in the past without dogs? If you are new to hunting check out your state's laws and make sure everything you do is permitted before you do it. Some states can be pretty strict. As far as I know every state has their hunting regulations posted online now. You can usually find the regs. through a link to fish & wildlife departments on the state's home page. Many of the hound hunting sites, even if not specifically for your breed, have lots of members who also hunt with catahoulas who could give you more detailed information. Do a google search on hounds + hunting + whatever species you'll be hunting for and some great sites will come up.
The only thing I wanted to ad to the above post, is look for a local gun club as well. I know here in pa, our gun clubs are also our hunting clubs. That is where we find alot of the canine hunters as well. You can also talk to your breeder. They usually have a lot of insight on how to train their breed.
I would learn about what to look for in a dog. I have working dogs. And not all dogs work. This is where having knowledge on what your looking comes in handy. It would be terrible if you go your Catahoula, and when it turned about 1 you realize this dog does not have the stuff...just because it's mom and dad were are catahoula does not mean it's going to work like a catahoula. Dog selection is important.
I believe a dog's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment he holds dear, is when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-with a ball in his mouth."
