George is a 5 year old, neutered Pug, whom I adopted a 18 months ago. He was crate trained and housebroken when I got him. He still sleeps in the crate when I am at work but, 6 months ago, he began barking and whining every single night - and all night - while in his crate. After two weeks of the constant crying, I caved and began to allow him to sleep with me.
He'd been fine for the last 6 months but, three nights ago, he pooped in the hallway. Two nights ago, he pooped in the living room. And last night, he pooped in the living room again. This was done while I was asleep, so I didn't have the benefit of catching him in the act. I walk him every night before bed, and he always poops, so I don't think that these were simple accidents. I think he just pooped because he felt like it, which would mean that he is technically no longer housebroken.
What do I do? Do I need to put him back in the crate at bedtime? I'm hoping there is another solution. He's already in there for the 8 hours I'm at work. I'd hate to put him back in for another 8 hours at night.
Have you taken him to the vet for a checkup to see if anything is going on with him? If that all turns out fine, I would feed him early in the evening,as early as you can, anyway. Do you free feed? That may be part of the problem if you do. I would also advise you to gate off an area, or buy an X-pen, because it's not much of a life stuck in a crate all day. This is just my opinion, a lot of people crate their dogs all day, I just don't like it, as a breeder.
Thanks for the response! I feed him at 7am and at 5pm. I walk him at 8am, 5pm and 10pm. He's been to the vet recently and is in good health. I can't think of anything in our schedules that have shifted, or anything that would have happened to upset him. It's puzzling. But I can't have a dog pooping on the carpet on a nightly basis!
I may try gating off my bedroom door, so that he has to stay there in the room with me all night. And if he poops in there, I may have to rethink the crating situation.
Well, I barricaded my bedroom door last night (he sleeps with me) and no poop this morning. But then, while I was taking a shower, he did it again! And then he hid, so I know he knew he wasn't supposed to be doing it.
I don't know what to do! He's 5 years old, and has never done this before. I made sure to give him tons of attention yesterday afternoon, up until bedtime. He had an extra-long walk, we played, etc. This is really troubling me.
