Hi everyone and thank you for reading. Over the weekend I got a 3 month old Dalmatian puppy named whose name is Rocky. My first concern that I have is that he is not eating much. He doesn't want to eat in the morning. He eats his first meal around the afternoon and then he will not eat until late in the night around 9:30PM. I know puppies should be eating around 3 times a day...but he will not eat. I feed him Purina puppy dry food. My second concern is that when we go to play in the yard...he rips up my grass. He goes nuts on it..is this normal for puppies? Any advice or suggestions would be great thank you.
I would try a higher quality food, and possibly free feed him. Measure out the amount for his age and weight, and leave it out, until say about 5 o'clock pm. With the grass problem, he is old enough now to be leash training, and that will give him another focus, besides your lawn, going for walks, or runs, if you can. Try to re-focus him with a toy, and a loud 'NO'if he goes at the grass in the yard. Good luck with him.
definatly try the free feeding. some dogs just don't each as much, and their is nothing to worry about. Most of my pups didn't like a early morning feeding, and ate in the afternoon and evening. As far as the grass thing, if it is new to him then it is a ton of fun. It depends on where he was raised. If he stayed in a kennel or yard with little grass, the amount in your yard in exciting. he will probably settle down once the newness is over. It is a great time to start leash training, and obediance training.
Thank you for your replies. When you say free feeding, do you mean just leave the food in the morning until he eats it? If he eats his first serving, should I leave the second serving out again until he eats it. I will make sure that I don't feed him after 5PM..because when he eats at 10PM that means I have to take him out again to the bathroom at around 10: 30. Plus he is up at 5:30AM ready to go to the bathroom and then back to sleep for a nap. He sleeps alot.
As far as leash training goes, I am doing it. I have noticed that when he is not on a leash he plays more and does not go to the bathroom. When he is on the leash he will go. He grew up on a farm so he did have alot of grass, but I guess he still wants to play.
Just leave his food, all of it, for the day, and then if he has any left over at 5 or so, just take it away. Some dogs are just pickers, and others wolf everything down. Those are the ones you don't want to free feed.By the way, there's a very good informational food rating at the home page, Wiley's food grading, I recommend you look at that.
