We have a 14 week old mini dachshund. We got hime when he was six weeks old. We have been training him and he seems to be very intelligent. We were just wandering how to go about getting him to let us know when he has got to outside to go potty. Any suggestions are helpful.
I have always had a lot of success with housebreaking puppies. The key is consistency. As soon as you get him out of his crate in the morning, tell him "let's go outside, let's go potty" continue to tell him this until you get out the door, put him in the yard and tell him "go potty" as soon as he does, praise him for doing what he was told and immediately take him in. Don't play with him outside immediately after, it will send mixed messages. Playing outside is a different thing done at a different time.
Concentrate on "let's go outside, let's go potty". Take him out using the same phrase within 10-20 minutes of eating and immediately after he wakes from any nap. This consistency will help him connect outside with going potty outside.
If he has an accident, punish him accordingly and then tell him "potty outside" and take him out even if he just went. All members of the family must be consistent in this training. All my dogs have been house broke in no more than 6 days (my beagle took six days, stubborn breed).
Remember PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE when he does it correctly with an excited voice(you went potty outside! Good Boy!) and when he has an accident, use a stern voice (We go potty outside, outside!) And then praise him out there after he goes. Positive reinforcement will correct the behavior and not leave him confused why he was taken outside.
I have used this to housebreak pups as young as 6 weeks and as old as 5 months and it has never taken more than 6 days. Hope this helps, good luck. Let us know how it's going.
You could use a bell on the door hang it low enough so the puppy can reach it, when you take the pupy out use a command like potty or some word but always use the same command than kick the bell with your foot, the puppy will associate going outside with the bell as the puppy gets more used to going outside he will hit the bell to let you know he wants to go ouitside.
