Can anyone reccomend a good quality puppy food for a picky eater? I have tried various brands, such as Eukanuba, Go! Now, Canidae, Wellness, and Blue Buffalo. My miniature dachshund pup turns his nose up at just about everything unless it's mixed with warm water (that only worked with Blue Buff), or mixed with yogurt or wet food. I have no problem with foods that contain by-products so long as they are from a named animal source and I also have no problem with corn being in the food so long as it's not the main protein source. I do however, want the food to be preserved only with natural preservatives. So based on this information, does anyone have any suggestions? I have never owned a "picky" dog before, so I have no experience with chooseing a food for palatability. I would really like to find a food he will eat plain, especially since starting next week, I won't be home during the day to be mixing "goodies" in his kibble.
Try Eagle Pack Holistic Salmon, (my dogs went nuts over this food) or Innova Evo. Both are very high quality, Innove is very high in protein (42%), so if that's an issue, I would go Royal Canine perhaps, or Van Pattens potato and duck. If your dog turns up his nose at any one of these, then I would simply mix a tablespoon of yoghurt into it. The dog will not starve himself; so I would pick the best quality I could afford, and stick to your guns. Don't give in and feed him anything else. Cut out all treats until he's eating his food regularly. Good luck with him. I tried to write the Mr. Van Patten's name, and apparently the admin doesn't approve of the shortened name of Richard. I was unable to post this until I took his name out.
Merrick makes a great dry kibble, very healthy. When you add water it turns to gravy. I have yet to see anyone pass it up. Even our rescue dog who is in the later stages of kidney failure loves it. My own personal dogs enjoy Innova. Good luck
My dog is also VERY picky. He turns his nose up to many dry and wet foods.
The dry foods I have had most success with are Timberwolf Organics Wild & Natural, Solid Gold Just a Wee Bit, and Innova EVO. These are all higher protein formulas available in a very small kibble. I recommend the last two highest. EVO is his favorite so that's what he gets now.
