We are the owners of 3 lovely Shih-tzu's. Ella(3 years in Dec.) Snickers(2 in Feb.) and their baby Chloe(8 months). Here's my delima... We spayed Chloe at 16 weeks during a hernia and prolapsed eye gland repair which was scheduled 2 weeks prior to her surgery. We planned on also nutering Snickers but by the time we tried to schedule an appointment the vets were unwilling to nuter him due to the time frame in accordance with our move. They wanted more than 2 weeks for him to recoop. Unfortunately we were in the middle of a move from Alaska to the Lower 48. During our move Ella came into heat. We were unable to keep the dogs seperate. We did take precautions such as only walking them on leashes and keeping Snickers a good distance apart, and while in the house Ella wore a "Doggie Diaper", the type with velco that raps around her waist and has an insert for a pad and a hole for her tail. Well... Snickers found a way around that by pushing the tail hole low enough and they locked twice on the day our movers were here so we were unable to fix the situation that day. The following day we went to the store and purchased a couple of baby diaper covers... the cloth ones... and cut a tiny hole just big enough for for Ella's tail to fit through. Then we put the "doggie diaper" over top of that. Snicker's was very frusturated to say the least, there was no way of getting around that.
Is it possible that Ella may not be pregnant?
I hope she is not. We allowed Ella one litter after tons of research (both Ella and Snickers meet breed standars to a tee and have no heridatary health issues) and chose to keep one of the litter of 4 (Chloe) due to her having a hernia and prolapsed eye gland and had her spayed. We also required the puppies to be spayed or nutered. We are not trying to be breeders so please no derogatory comments about allowing one litter. We took precautions but due to circumstances beyond our control we may have another litter.
Ella would be at 45 days gestation and we currently feel no puppies, but she does feel heavier and thicker. If someone is willing to give me some advice I would appreciate it.
In my experience, I would suspect that she is indeed pregnant. Usually, when the dogs tie - there are pups on the way. Also, if she has jus a few pups - you may not be able to feel them even at day 60. I would suggest finding a vet that offers pregnancy ultrasound - that way you can make sure, and know how many pups to expect. Good luck!
A single tie over 5mins is usually pregnant. Esp. when the male tries that hard. You could try an ultrasound, or you could have an x-ray to see. I prefer an x-ray, that way you see how many pups you are having. Good luck and get that whelping box ready
I was really hoping for a different replyI love my little Shih Tzus and didn't really want Ella to go through another pregnancy, especially so soon. Chloe is only 9 months old!!!! We tried so hard to keep them apart as soon as we saw the signs of Ella coming into heat. If we hadn't been in the middle of a move we would have had Snickers fixed as soon as we arrived!!! Ifeel bad for Ella, I will let everyone know how it goes and what we find out... Maybe she will just have one since we can't feel any puppies yet. Cross your fingers for me
If they tied twice, that you know of,she will almost certainly be pregnant. You will have more than one pup also, because of that fact. You would'nt want just one because the chances of a cesaerian increase greatly. I know you tried your best with the diaper, but as a breeder, I know that where there's a will there's a way, and my studs would have those ripped off in a few seconds. The only way to be sure they don't breed, is to have one or the other seperated for at least a month. Some bitches will wait, even though you think the window of opportunity has passed, and still get bred, at 30-32 days from the first day of their cycle. I hope for your little dog's sake that she is not pregnant, but I'm thinking she is. Sorry these are not the words you wanted to hear!
