So I have a 3 month old rat terrier mix. She is great. She is doing really well with almost everything. The one problem we are having, is the fact that she hates being crated. We put her in her crate when we leave for the day, only to come home to a mess in the cage. She pees, and poops and shreds everything we put in there. Our neighbos say they can hear her for hours crying bloody murder through out the day. It has forced us to never want to leave the house because we dont want complaints. We have had her now for 3 weeks and nothing has improved. PLEASE HELP!!!
When my brother got his golden retriever, I puppy sat during the day. I got her used to the crate by starting her off slow. Put her in for 20 minutes, then let her out. Put her in, praise her for going in, then let her out. Slowly work your way up to more and more time. A good toy, like a Kong, or something to keep her occuppied would be good as well.
When I got my Shih Tzu puppy, I got a Superyard and kept him in there during the day, and came home at lunch to let both dogs out. I don't care for crate training myself, so this worked well for me. Neither of my dogs bark while I am gone.
Even if you are on the right track, you will still get run over if you just sit there. (Will Rogers)
I would definitely put her in an x-pen, or gate off a space in the house. She can't hold her bladder for 8 hours at 3 months of age; so you could hire someone to come and let her out, or put her in a doggy day care. There is a place for crate training, but I personally don't agree with keeping a puppy in one all day long.
some people rave about crate training others hate it.a rat terrier especially @ 3 months old, cannot hold it for hours on end.she lonely too...only 12 weeks old.crate training has to be started slowly..she may have some anxiety about it also...there are calming drops.or have some one walk her a couple times a day.
