I agree with rutlyr. Why mix the four breeds, Black Lab, Am Staff, Black Great Dane and Doberman, when they are all beautiful dogs in their own right. What you end up with in the canis panther, is a huge mixed breed dog, and I do not for one minute believe that they breed true, since they've only been around for a short time. To me it's just like all the other designer breeds, mixing a few breeds together and coming up with a 'purpose' for it. We already have completely competent protective breeds, in fact any dog can be protective. I would hate to see these big beautiful mutts go the way of the APBT, and have some idiot start fighting them...they probably already have. I love APBT's, and always have.
You all are entitled to your opinions. I only started this topic because I wanted to discuss stories and traits with other owners. Positive info trading. I think the breed is wonderful and I didn't get him to fight or be a bad dog. It is a great breed when handled properly just like the APBT. The two are similar in character but not in size.
climberchic, I'm sorry, I should have said welcome to the forum. I'm sure you love your dog, and I would probably love him too, because I love big dogs. My argument is not with you at all, it's with the originator of this mix. Any one of us could go out and do the same thing, as we have already seen with the multiple small breed mixes, and some of them are extremely expensive. I also dispute the fact that this mix can breed true ,after so little time. Heck look at the dog on my avatar...half a white head, going straight back to the white terrier that is in the Boston breed. I love him anyway.
Thanks for the sorry. I just don't see why on these discussions everything turns into a battle. I would think people would just want to share stories of their dogs. Or help each other with problems. You're dogs are cute by the way.
I am new to this forum but after reading this thread Im sorry but Im gonna have to do a little venting.
First of all, Climberchic: whats up? Im a Canis Panther owner and glad to meet you. I live out in Maryland. I think this breed is awesome. I would appreciate exchanging any info on your pup if possible.
second - Please puh puh puh please dont listen to these bordeline retarded post by these ignorant people going on about dog breeds. They flat out don't know what they are talking about. I think my dog and his breed are great. For people to question "why breed these perfectly good breeds together?"...why not? The early combustion engines worked, why change them? To make them more efficent, faster, stronger. Similar reasons for breeding animals.
And for all those people out there going on some ignorant self righteous powertripping rant about the Canis panther isn't like their breed, and how the CP's are glorified mutts, and whatever other nonesense they are putting out, here's a quick refresher; if you are going to generalize the CP as a "mutt" than we will have to consider all domestic dogs "designer mutts" since they are nothing more than mongrels of the wolf that have been bred for specific charictaristics to suit our needs.
"...a pointless breed" what an idiotic asinine comment. And the APBT has what point in today's standards? Making our coffee?? Doing our taxes?? 80yrs ago it was bred for hunting and livestock driving but today is it used for protection and companionship but then again so is the majority of breeds that exsist today. So what is the point of the APBT when there are lots of other breeds that are bigger and more suited to protection? The point is everyone likes what they like; some like big dogs, some like small, some like solid colors, others like multi-colored. The truth is there are so many breeds because of peoples different needs and tastes. Several of these breeds do the exact same things so why continue breeding them? To questions one breeds purpose is not only stupid its irrelevent. I have both a Canis Panther and an APBT which I love them both as individual dogs and as breeds.
So to clear things up the canis panther is as much of a "breed" as the APBT or rottweiler, they are just a younger breed. So if anyone would like to argue that fact please feel free to submit any evidence.
subternal, first of all I don't appreciate being called borderline retarded, and I don't know what I'm talking about. How many years have you been breeding dogs? For your information, the shelters and rescues are full of dogs that are the result of people throwing 2 dogs together, and coming up with an unhealthy or just plain ugly dog that nobody wants. There are thousands upon thousands of them. The biggest population of dogs is mainly Pitbull, or Pitbull mixes, or Labs. The 'borderline retarded 'have taken the beautiful APBT and are busily trying to destoy the breed, making them fight, and keeping them in the most inhumane ways possible. To climberchic, I am not fighting with you. This is a discussion forum, and I'm merely giving you my take on things. I have nothing against you or your big sloppy chops dog, I would love him. This is not what I'm getting at though, and beside the point.

Amen Pen...I don't believe that anyone on here would dispute that all breeds we have today result from selective mixing of some sort to better the breed for what they want it to do. That's not the problem that we have, the problem is that there are WAYYYYY too many dogs out there without homes or in homes where they're not treated right. The absolute only time two dogs should be breed I believe would be two who are medically and genetically sound dogs to better their breed. We don't need to be adding more breeds to this overpopulated pet world. And back to your making a better and stronger dog might I ask why? Previous breeds that are results of SELECTIVE mixing were to better hone skills that were needed such as hunting, guarding livestock, etc. Might I please ask what this breed is going to do? We live in a day and age know where things like that aren't overly important for the most part and to purposefully breed a mutt, because that's all that it is albeit it may be a wonderful and loving and cute pet, is like putting 10 more dogs in a shelter. Personally I think people who can't wrap their tiny little minds around the animal abuse and neglect we have in this country are a lot closer to retardation that I am.
Personally I suggest these two juvenile delinquents either form their own chat group or find one of like-minded individules.I have spent over 30 years of my life cleaning up behind the same type of mentality. Anyone who has been active in dog rescue will have little sympathy for breeders of such a dog or the people dumb enough to buy one of these animals and by doing so give an incentive to produce more of these dogs. I know that any one of these dogs may be a wonderful pet or it could become a dangerous liabilty. My father owned wolf hybrids for many years so I have first hand experience with them, all were great with family members but all of them bit someone outside the family at some point in their lives. I would never breed such an animal and would never own one myself. It is hard enough to get stable temperaments and sound healthy dogs within the breeds we have already, no thanks to the irresponsible morons who think they know all about what it takes to produce good quality dogs.Producing great dogs is a labor of love and demands much sacrifice in time and money and often results in lot of heartbreak.
1st- ok i dont know if you guys actually read the post that I wrote or your just guessing, but I never named anyone as a "retard". I said some of the posts you wrote were borderline retarded.
Pen2 "How many years have you been breeding dogs?" What does this have to do with the topic of disccussion? I wasn't talking about breeding dogs, I was talking about a BREED of dog. I made a reference to the reasoning behind why people bred dogs in the first place.
For your information, the shelters and rescues are full of dogs that are the result of people throwing 2 dogs together, and coming up with an unhealthy or just plain ugly dog that nobody wants You are going off on a tangent. What is your point?
lovinmylucy The absolute only time two dogs should be breed I believe would be two who are medically and genetically sound dogs to better their breed... And back to your making a better and stronger dog might I ask why? Do you actually read the stuff you post? Or were you just asking a rhetorical question?
We live in a day and age know where things like that aren't overly important for the most part and to purposefully breed a mutt, because that's all that it is albeit it may be a wonderful and loving and cute pet, is like putting 10 more dogs in a shelter. Show me 1. Show me an image, an article, a video of 1 in a shelter. You keep talking in subjective terms and asking redundant questions. Most of the breeds in todays world have lost their orignal purpose as a breed itself. It doesn't stop people from breeding them even if they use sound breeding practices.
drogheda bullmastiffPersonally I suggest these two juvenile delinquents either form their own chat group or find one of like-minded individules Who are you talking to and what are you talking about? If I recall I came on this forum titled "canis panther owners" because of "like minded individules" so in that effect we DID form our own chat group. Instead of spending 30years cleaning up after poor breeding try school instead.
I know that any one of these dogs may be a wonderful pet or it could become a dangerous liabilty. Thats any and every dog.
After all is said and done what I dont get is why climberchic comes on here and starts a thread to look for other people that have interest in a similar breed and all you guys do is talk trash about a breed that you honestly and completely know nothing about. You twist the intent of this thread to be about breeding and shelters filling up.
All bull#$% aside I can say that regardless of our beliefs in the technicalities of THIS breed, we all agree on the ethics behind sound breeding.
